    In recent years, construction planning of large-scale tunnels using the shield tunneling method has been increasing along with the rise in the utilization of deep underground space. Such tunnels require a tunnel structural building frame with a specified level of fire resistance so as to retain functionality in the event of a fire of a given severity. Consequently, many fire protection approaches for concrete, a constituent of tunnel structures, have been developed, but no unified guidelines for the design and execution of fire protection exist at present. For this reason, the “Subcommittee for Research on Fire Protection Technology for Concrete Tunnel Structures (270)” was established under the Concrete Committee of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. This subcommittee has developed a Guideline for the Fire Protection of Concrete in Tunnel Structures (Draft) based on actual fire protection design and construction projects and the latest research findings. Namely (1) fire protection objectives and performance requirements, (2) fire protection design and verification, (3) fire protection construction, and (4) fire protection maintenance. This paper provides an overview of this guideline.

    Class-A joints are joints having performance that is almost equivalent to that of rebar base material, but until now the conventional method of evaluating performance was specified for each joining method and there was no unified concept. Therefore, JRJI prepared the performance evaluation standard for Class-A joints to be applied to all joining methods, established four basic performance attributes (configuration, strength, rigidity, and toughness) that a rebar joint should possess, and defined the performance verification test method and the criteria for the test results with regard to each attribute. The conventional performance evaluation methods specified according to the joining method have been unified by this standard, and as a result, it has become possible to select the appropriate method from among various joining methods.

    This paper gives an overview of the damage to bridges caused by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami Disaster and its characteristics, and then goes on to verify the extent to which the existing bridge stability evaluation formula is applicable, based on the damage data for the bridges in the tsunami inundation areas.

    The Jyugou Bridge is Japan's first post-tensioning PC road bridge. This historic bridge marked its 60th birthday in 2013 and remains in service to this day. A detailed inspection of the Jyugou Bridge was carried out recently to evaluate its soundness. The inspection of prestressing steel, etc., was conducted on the Itoshiro Bridge, a bridge that was built four months after the Jyugou Bridge using the same material, and which collapsed due to flood damage. The inspection showed the concrete to be dense and of high strength, with no degradation progress. Further, the quality of the reinforcing bars and prestressing steel and the grout condition was verified, and it was established that sixty years after its construction, the Jyugou Bridge remains sound.
