The estimation of the ultimate lateral shear strength of reinforced concrete structures is the most important design procedure required in the new earthquake resistant regulation for building structures in Japan. The purpose of the method is that the reinforced concrete buildings shall not collapse by the severe earthquake motions. The value of the required ultimate lateral shear strength of the reinforced concrete structures is based on the experience of severe earthquake motions, the stability of restoring force characteristics of the structures.
This paper presents the outline of the ultimate lateral shear strength in connection with the historical background, the new earthquake resistant design method, and the restoring force characteristics of reinforced concrete structures. Moreover, this paper includes the outline of the calculation methods of the ultimate lateral shear strength and the reinforced concrete structures which don't need to execute the design procedure of the ultimate lateral shear strength.

In Japan rapid advancement toward use of the New Austrian Tunneling method has been achieved. Emphasis is placed on the use of shotcrete as a primary supporting element. The quality and the applicability of shotcrete are influenced by many factors, i. e. materials, mix proportion, eqipments, spraying system and so on. This paper first covers a general review on shotcrete applied to tunnel construction, then some problems concerning the materials and mix proportion of shotcrete are proposed. Special emphasis is placed on the details of the application and the effects of the accelerators, which dominates the properites of shotcrete. This article would be useful in the planning and practical application of shotcrete in construction.

This report describes the installation of piling-“large bore cast-in-situ reinforced concrete piles”-by a reverse circulation drill method. Since the piles constructed were for the disaster prevention buildings in the Shirahige-East district, it was designed to greatly improve the quality and stability of both super- and substructures. It is anticipated that strong horizontal force would act upon these piles because of the soft alluvial layer (which may be liquefied in event of earthquakes) existing in the upper part of the ground in this area. The large bore piles which have very high horizontal resistance are used as the foundation piles for these buildings. The quality, stability and strength of piles of this type depend largely upon the manner in which the work is carried out. Thus piling work was carried out in strict compliance with the stringent work plan. Therefore, we believe that these piles achieve the quality and stability required for disaster prevention areas.
