The surface treatment of kaolinite was carried out by irradiation of low-temperature plasma to a mixture of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane and kaolinite under atomospheric pressure of nitrogen.
By the silicone coating, character of kaolinite was changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. At the surface of kaolinite covered with silicone polymer, the active sites were blocked up, which prevented the deterioration of perfume (linalool).
Silicone-coated kaolinite with silicone was more stable to solvents, such as chloroform, and high temperature compared with physically-mixed silicone and kaolinite. Structure of the silicone polymer was shown to be composed of straight chain, cyclic chain, and network structure by the analysis of pyrolysis gas chromatography.
