Nickel-coated glass flakes with enough luster was prepared by reduction of [Ni (acac)
2] to metallic nickel in DMSO containing (NH
2)
2·H
2O. Glass flakes were not sufficiently coated with nickel when anisole was used as a solvent, and didn't have enough luster. Nickel-coated glass flakes prepared in DMSO, on the other hand, gave enough luster.
Nickel was heterogeneously precipitated on glass flakes since (NH
2)
2·H
2O is insoluble in anisole, while nickel was homogeneously coated onto glass flakes in DMSO because (NH
2)
2·H
2O is soluble. Fine nickel particles were covered onto the surface of glass flakes. The surface of the coated nickel in DMSO was smooth and its thickness was uniform. Nickel-coated glass flakes with sufficient luster were not obtained by using water, ethanol and N, N-dimethylformamide as solvents.
