Aluminium added to carbon-containing refractories reacts with C(s),CO(g) and/or N2(g) to form Al4C3,AlN and/or Al2O3 durlng heating.
In this paper,a thermochemical analysis for the reaction processes was done,Carbon-oxidation are suppressed during the processes in which CO(g) is reduced to C(s) by Al,Al4C3 and AIN.Aluminium-containing vapors such as Al(g),Al2O(g) and AlN(g) take part in the reactions, and as AlN whiskers and Al4C3 plate-like crystals grow. These crystals are considered to contribute to increase ofstrength of the refractories at high temperature.
