Oxidation of carbon-containing refractories such as MgO-C refractories is considered to be accelerated by open pore under condition in which temperature changes. This reasoning was supported theoretically in this study. In this view point,it is important to lower open porosity formed in initial stage of operation so as to decrease wear by oxidation. Therefore,in this paper influences of heating-rate,kind of binders and addition of metals on formation of open pore were investigated, and the following fact became evident. In order to lower open porosity,it is useful to reduce heating-rate,to use resin binder with a lage amount of carbonization and to add metals.
