The sintering behavior of spinel added with TiO2 at 1200 ℃~1700 ℃ was investigated and the sintering
mechanism was discussed. The results showed that the sinterability of spinel was greatly improved by adding more than 0.5 mass% TiO2.At a low temperature,TiO2 reacted with MgA1204 to form
MgxAl2(1-x)Ti(1+x)O5 solid solution, from which A1203 and TiO2 were segregated when the temperature was further increased. The improvement in sinterability of spinel is considered to be related to the segregation of Al203 from MgxAl2(1-x)Ti(1+x)O5,the formation of Mg rich spinel and the dissolution of TiO2 in MgA1204 crystals.
