Various kinds of Metal are added to carbon-containing refractory as antioxidant. The degree of the effect of metal is different by kind, quantity and distribution in the refractory. In this study, the most effective and ideal method of the Al distribution in the refractory was examined. As a result, when Al metals distributed among graphite grains, pore size of the refractory became smaller and its decreasing of strength was restrained after heating. Moreover, densification of the refractory was promoted because of formation of spinel crystals among the graphite grains. On the other hand, when Al grains are on the surface of MgO grains, pore size became lager and the strength decreased. From the above-mentioned results, it is desirable to distribute Al grains among graphite grains during process of mixing raw materials of the refractory.
