One of the important factors which control the service life of SG plate would be the generatlon of cracks. The finite element method is applied to a transient thermal state in order to investigate the relationship between the SG plate confinement conditions and the thermal stress profiles. The analysis is conducted with both the ends of the SG plate being confined and with the tapered positions being confined.Under each condition, the tensile stresses, compressive stresses, shearing stresses and the displacements over the plate are calculated. The analysis shows that the numerlcal estimate for crack formation coincide well with the real crack profiles. The numerical prediction for the tapered positions cofinement is more satisfactory than that of the ends-confinement,
