In recent years, contemporary art has been actively incorporated into community revitalization projects in islands and other disadvantaged areas. Previous studies have indicated that such art events revitalize human relations in the community. This has the effect of temporarily revitalizing the community. However, how to link this to the continuous development of local communities remains an open question. One solution is to involve local residents in the events and create a chain of community development. In order for local residents to participate in events, the relationship between art events and the local community is crucial. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to clarify the actual operation of art events and the relationship between art events and local residents. As a case study, it take up an art project promoted by a company on Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. The first survey, conducted between 2018 and 2019, interviewed the key players in the art project. The second survey, conducted in 2021, interviewed key figures in community development organizations organized by local residents. Through these interviews, it was found that the art project brought reform to the town's tourism industry and that it had no connection to other industries. It was also found that the art projects were not accepted by other local residents as part of the local culture, but only as a tourism resource. The relationship between the art project and local residents was characterized by friction. Based on the above, the consideration have presented possible benefits of a smoother relationship between art projects and local communities in the future. Specifically, it mentioned the potential for mutual development between the creativity of art and the local context. For these elements to be mutually beneficial, it is necessary to establish a reciprocal relationship between the art event and the local community. It is importance to establish such a relationship in order for the art event to continue to bring about community development.
