Since the reversion to Japan, the tourism industry in Okinawa has grown rapidly along with the increased number of tourists. This development is basically attributed to the abundance of its subtropical tourism resources. Furthermore this remarkable development of the tourism has been facilitated by the promotion of the Japanese airlines. The airlines promoted Okinawa's tourism by expanding air routes, adopting the low price policy of air fares, making the destination campaign in large scale and expanding its business to the hotel industry and so on. The main purpose of this article is to clarify the effects of air transport which contributed to the development of the tourism in Okinawa especially during the period right after the International Ocean Exposition.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss issues related to the development of an interdisciplinary approach in tourism research. Although various social sciences are undertaking tourism research, an interdisciplinary approach has not been realized as most of the social sciences concerned, except for economics or special areas of psychology, cannot utilize mathematical representation that are the sine qua non of an interdisciplinary approach. Tourism research should therefore aim at facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to it. Such a new method may be that of a tourismological theory as a meta theory, derived from a variety of individual theories in the related social sciences.

This study focuses on "Hokkaido Shisatsu Binran",(hereafter called "Shisatsu Binran"), an official guide book published in Hokkaido in 1910-1931, and aims to clarify the background of the publication and to find out the changes of inspection places that Hokkaido Government recommended. The findings are as follows. (1) Shisatsu Binran was updated several times from the end of the Meiji era to the beginning of the Showa era in response to the changes of Hokkaido's position and role in Japan, and played a complementary role in achieving political issues of each era. (2) The appeal points of "Shisatsu Binran" changed with the times and reflected the changes of inspection places and routes that the Government recommended.
