    We observed the external surface and connective tissue cores (CTCs) of the lingual papillae (filiform, fungiform and vallate papillae) of adult Spotted seals (Phoca largha) using SEM and light microscopy. The tongue was Vshaped and its apex was rather rounded. On the dorsal surface from apex to the one-third posterior of the tongue, the lingual mucosa was densely covered by filiform papillae, with a scatted distribution of dome-like fungiform papillae, which have orthokeratinized epithelium. At the posterior part of the tongue, filiform papillae were totally diminished and their epithelium was parakeratinized. Approximately 6-7 vallate papillae were arranged in a V-shape on the posterior of the tongue. After removal of the epithelium, the CTCs of the filiform papillae that were distributed at apex consisted of a primary core and approximately 5-6 rod-shaped small accessory cores. The CTCs of filiform papillae that were distributed at anterior part of the tongue lacked primary protrusions and possessed approximately 10-15 rod shaped small accessory cores that were arranged in a horseshoe manner. The CTCs of fungiform papillae had cylindrical primary cores and were fringed with accessory protrusion. In the Vallate papillae, taste buds were only seen at the dorsal epithelium.

    We investigated the properties of the muscle spindle in the masseter muscle at an immunohistochemical level in rats fed for 6 weeks. Slow myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoforms were measured and intrafusal fibers in the muscle spindle were studied to determine the relationship between the superficial and deep regions of rat masseter muscle after alternated feeding pattern. However, muscle spindles were found in both regions, mainly in the deep region of the posterior superficial region of masseter muscle. The total number of the slow fiber in the intrafusal fiber and number of muscle spindle in the deep region were high from 5 to 8 weeks old in spite of various dimensions of data such as diameter and the compositions of the intrafusal fiber. The relationship of the protein expression of slow MyHC in the two regions at 5 weeks old reversed five weeks later (10 weeks old). This period is an important stage because the mastication system in masseter muscle with muscle spindle may be changed during the alternated feeding pattern of suckling to mastication. The changes may be a marker of the feeding system and of the control by the tension receptor of muscle spindle in this stage of masseter muscle after postnatal development.

    During tooth development, tooth shape is mediated by the ECM through epithelial-mesenchymal interactions mediated by the ECM at the epithelia-mesenchymal junction. Blood vessel endothelium growth is mainly regulated by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the relationship between tooth shape formation and VEGF are unknown. We examined immunohistochemical localization of VEGF and its receptor VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2), collagen I and fibronectin, (both representative protein of ECM) at the epithelia-mesenchymal junction of human deciduous teeth from the cap stage to late bell stages in a human fetus at 16, 20, 24, 28 and 32 weeks of gestation. Immunoreactivity at the basement membrane for VEGF was detected from the cap stage to the bell stage. Immunoreactivity to fibronectin was weak in the cap stage and increased in the bell stage; collagen I was negative in the cap stage and slightly expressed in the bell stage in the basement membrane. We suggest that VEGF and ECM affect cooperatively in tooth shape formation at the basement membrane.

    The superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) is one of the longest tendons in the horse. In racehorses, disturbance of the locomotor functions of the SDFT occurs most frequently in the central area of the mid-metacarpal region. While many studies have investigated the equine SDFT, there are no reports to date of the morphological characteristics of collagen fibrils in the central and peripheral areas of each of the three regions that comprise the entire tendon: the myotendinous junction (MTJ), the mid-metacarpal region (mM) and the osteotendinous junction (OTJ). Mass average diameter (MAD), which provides functional information on the mean collagen fibril diameter and tensile strength of the tendon, was found to be smaller in the central area than in the peripheral area of all three regions. The MAD value was lowest in both the central and peripheral areas in the MTJ region, and tended to increase generally in a distal direction in the OTJ. The OTJ is important parts that unite with the bone.
    We conclude that morphological structure suggested that it corresponds to biomechanical function in some region of the equine SDFT.

    We evaluated the effect of the duration of occlusal disharmony induced chronic stress on hippocampal function by examining spatial memory in the Morris water maze and on the number of hippocampal neurons in aged senescence-accelerated prone (SAMP8) mice. The bite of SAMP8 mice was raised 0.1 mm using dental adhesive. Groups of mice were tested in the Morris water maze 8, 11, or 22 d after raising the bite. The results indicated that the longer the duration of the bite-raised condition, the greater the impairment in spatial learning ability and the greater the decrease in the number of neurons in the hippocampal CA3 subfield. Thus, behavioral and morphologic deficits induced by the bite-raised condition in aged SAMP8 mice are influenced by the duration of the occlusal disharmony.
