1) We observed successive l y the changes on alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and PAS positive substances of the autonomic nerve cells of the myenteric and submucous plexus of the small intestine of mouse caused by the pilocarpin injection.
2) In the myenteric plexus o f the control case, we classified each three types of the nerve cells according to the intensity of the activity of alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase and to the stainability of the PAS positive substances.
3) Alkaline p h osphatase In the myente r i c plexus, all kinds of cells increase their activity on 15 and 30 minutes cases after injection. On one hour case, the activity decreases and is almost the same or somewhat weaker than the control case. 'O n two, four and six hours cases, the activity is the same as the control case. The changes on the cell of the first type is more feeble than that of the other two. The cells of the sub m ucous plexus show the similar change to those of the myenteric plexus. But the degree of the activity on one and two hours cases is less than the myenteric plexus and four hours case shows the same activity as the control case.
4) Acid phosphatase In the my e nteric plexus, the activity increases on the 15 minutes case a little but further increases on the 30 minutes and one hour cases. But the activity decreases on the two hours case, to the degree which is the same as or somewhat weaker than the control case. On four and six hours cases, the activity is the same as the control case. The changes on the cell of the first type are not so significant as those of the other two. In the submucous plexus, the nerve cells show the same changes as those of the myenteric plexus did. But in some cells of the submucous plexus, the activity does not decrease distinctly on two, four and six hours cases and is kept to the same degree as one hour case. 5) PAS positive substance, In the cells of both plexuses, the stainability increases considerably on the 30 minutes case. On one, two, four, and six hours- cases,. the stainability is the same as on 30 minutes case. The PAS positive substances are not glycogen but something else.
