The purpose of this essay is to make the meaning of the formal theory of the Constructivism clear. In Russia of the nineteen-twenties there are two main schools of architecture ; ASNOVA (Association of the new architects) and OSA (Society of the modern architects). ASNOVA inherited the theory of design from Vkhutemas (Higher artistic-technical workshops), that is, the artistic formal theory of Malevich, Kandinsky, Gabo and Pevsner and the basic design of architecture atelier (Ladovsky, etc.), and so we can define ASNOVA as Formalism, like the opoyaz (Society for study of poetic language). OSA, that declared itself the Constructivism and functionalism, inherited the theory of architecture from the productivism of Vkhutemas and ASNOVA, and OSA developped it to the elementalistic-functionalism, the same as the Constructivism in Europe (International Style). The formal theories of design of ASNOVA and OSA was so artistic, but may be instructive for us as the pioneer from the scientific design theory, though now we cannot know them in detail.
