Die Asthetik Schillers, wie H. Kuhn hinweist, nahm die Aufgabe auf sich, das, was Winckelmann als die Gehalt der griechische Kunst erschaut hatte, unter von Kant aufgestellten neuen philosophischen Horizont, theoretisch zu stellen. Schiller stellt das Asthetische in der Mitte zwischen Form und Stoff, Freiheit und Notwendigkeit, Aktivitat und Passivitat. Der Begriff "die Mitte" zwischen beiden gegensatzlichen Polen ist der Grundbegriff, worunter Hegel nachdem das Klassische bestimmte. Diese Charakterisierung des Asthetischen als das Mittelzustand in Schillers Asthetik d.h. auch als eine gluckliche Mitte im modernen Mensch-Sein, das im grundlichen Gegensatz zwischen Vernunft und Sinnlichkeit ist, richtet sich auf die Feststellung der eigentlichen Menschheit, womit die harmonische Einheit der Menschheit synthetisch zustande kommt. Weil die Vernunft aber die transzendentale absolute Freiheit von dem Sinnlichen, ohne der Kompromiss mit allem Sinnlichen, besitzt, tragt zugleich die Schillers klassische Bestimmung des Asthetischen in der Harmonie zwischen dem Vernunftigen und dem Sinnlichen, die Seite, in dieser Grenze nicht stehen bleiben zu konnen. Im solchen Sinne muss man sagen, dass was der Schillers Asthetik zugrunde liegt, kein angeblich klassischer Geist, der Geist eines unbezweifelbar modernen Mensch ist, der durch und durch aufgrund der klassischen Norm und nach dem vollkommeneren, allgemeingultigeren asthetischen Ideal strebt.
