In this paper, an adaptive replacement policy for a finite time span is considered, assuming that the failure distribution is a Weibull one with unknown scale parameter. This policy is characterized by the fact that after each replacement a new planned replacement interval is selected so as to minimize the expected expenditure during the remaining time, taking in account the previous information and new data obtained, after each replacement, about the unknown parameter. Using some properties derived from this policy, the authors found the optimal replacement interval numerically.

This paper deals with the allocation technique using statistical procedures with regard to the layout problem. With this technique, the relative transport distance of each location and the relative transport volume of each department are calculated from the distance matrix and the volume matrix by statistical procedures. These relative values play an important role in allocating departments to locations. As the algorithm or this technique is very simple, the sub-optimal layout can be determined easily by using a desk-calculator.

This paper proposes an extensive application of the "up and down" method, which was originally used as a means of analyzing the sensitivity data. The decrement of the production rate due to a conscious plan truncates possible demand and, in consequence, may lead to misjudgment of future demand. An optimal decision rule of production planning in the above case is developed by the application of the "up and down" method and by the use of the criterion that the total expected cost based on the distorted demand information shall be minimized. (A numerical example follows.)

A forecasting technique has been recently developed by us from the theory of the Kalman filter. Modifications of this process are considered for the case in which the gain of the Kalman filter becomes not sub-optimal but optimal.

A study of the "variable S" inventory model is given where re-ordering is an extension of the (S, T) policy, Since the concept of "variable S" policy is analogous to one of servo theory, this problem is discussed from the viewpoint of linear control theory. The ordering rule in the time region is derived by making use of finite exponential smoothing which is an efficient forecasting method. A selection of feedback parameters is also discussed with a view to achieving an excellent inventory policy.

In this paper a new idea for the design of man-machine systems is presented, whereby an operator can control a machine with little effort if the sensitivity vector of the state variation caused by a disturbance and the sensitivity vector of the state variation varied by the operator are linearly dependent. The paper shows how the condition whereby the two sensitivity vectors are linearly dependent is obtained, and also points out that in the event of the above condition not being satisfied man-machine systems can be designed such a way that the two sensitivity vectors approximately satisfy the condition.

We have promoted for this 3 years the project to reduce the Work-In-Process and the Finished Parts Inventory. The activities to improve the inventory are as follows : 1. Setting of standard for improvements of inventory control system to manage the Work-In-Process and the Finished Parts Inventory to the controlled status, by appropriation of the object of inventory, making visible the status of inventory, perfection of classified inventory and so on. 2. Improvements of manufacturing system and production control system to reduce the manufacturing cycle time, improve the supply of parts and inventory control function and so on. We got the result of 26% improvement of inventory turnover by this project.
