The probabilistic traveling salesman problem (PTSP) is a variant of the classical traveling salesman problem in which only a subset of customers (nodes) may be present in any given instance of the problem. We derive a lower bounding procedure for the PTSP using an extended concept of valid inequalities that play a central role in polyhedral approach to combinatorial optimization problems. We also present a variant of the branch-and-bound method, which we call the fathoming procedure for a generalization of the facility location problem, the probabilistic traveling salesman facility location problem.

In modeling a maintenance with inspections, the failure physics models are required. In this paper, the preventive maintenance model with periodic inspections of a continuously degrading system is described with a reaction rate model and a cumulative degradation model, both of which are one of the failure physics models. To inspect all the units in the system is often impossible because of a technical and/or an economic reason (s). Therefore the model consists of two subsystems ; an inspected subsystem (Is) and a non-inspected subsystem (Ns). Furthermore the degradation influence from Is to Ns is considered. Finally the model is analyzed with some numerical examples.

Most conventional studies on sales planning in a job shop type production system were concerned with the order selection for products that have an essentially identical pattern with those in the past. The current paper, however, focuses on innovative products with an inherent flexibility in design, and proposes a new system in which the plan unit is referred to as "Sales Orders Based on Search Activities for Upgraded Products" in a flow type job shop. There are three major proposals made here : 1.A sales order production model is configured in considerations of the customer's demands requirements for higher product value and earlier delivery. 2. A periodic profit is established within this model, based on the capability to control product orders. Of particular importance is to grasp the periodic fixed costs including costs of R & D of the ordered product as a controllable variable for profit goals. 3. After establishing this, the paper then clarifies the mechanism required to form the goals for the periodic profits for ordered products based on the concept of relative annual profit.

During the software testing phase, a lot of development resources are consumed to detect and remove software errors introduced in the software development process. Therefore, it is of great importance for a manager to decide how to effectively spend testing resource for software testing. In this paper, we consider two testing-resource allocation problems to make the best use of specified testing-resources during module testing. To describe the software error detection process during the testing, we apply a testing-effort dependent software reliability growth model based on a nonhomogeneous Poisson process.

The aim of plant layout design is the space arrangement of production systems, being settled by the mutual relationship between the system elements. We divide system design process into two stages. One is problem formulation stage, and the other is problem solving stage. In this paper, we propose a method for problem formulation in layout design process. The outline of this method as follows : data filing on products, equipments and processes, input data according to necessity and problem formulation through automatic data processing.

In this study the simulation of assembly line with work element times and assembly times is performed, and the relationship attained between the minimum work stations between work element time and cycle time is revealed. The application of the results to assembly line system is suggested. The minimum work stations can be obtained by increasing the cycle time relative to the work element time. The relationship between work element time, total assembly time and cycle time that can obtain the minimum work stations with a more than 95 percent probability is revealed. If it is difficult to practice the system of such minimum work stations, adding one more station is desirable.

In this paper, an integrated inventory model is given which unifies the inventory problem of a single finished product and its raw materials for the manufacturing system with a finite planning horizon. The problem of grouping raw materials economically so that common replenishment periods may be used is also considered. The purpose of this paper is to develop the optimal solution procedure for the integrated inventory model over the finite planning horizon.

A method for designing a robotic mixed product line is suggested. The roles of this design method are to select a kind of robot for each work station and to assign work to each robot from the viewpoint of maximizing the efficiency of executing desired production plans. This paper suggests a method to determine the production plans for designing robotic mixed product lines as a guideline on the basis of the characteristic of the design method. The effectiveness of the suggested method has been confirmed.

This paper discusses a typical job-shop control policy of a periodic type in the case where fixed switching costs are assumed when two processing types are switched from each other. First, the net reward (=price-cost) per unit time is represented by an embedded approach. Second, the problem of maximizing it with respect to two selection criteria and two switching levels are solved by using Tijms' algorithm (1980). Finally, by a numerical consideration, it is showed that the monotone contol policy would not be necessarily optimal.

It is well known that infrastructure networks are the key factors for the social change. This paper proposes a method for the analysis of the interrelationships among regions in Japan based on freight, telecommunications and postal OD flow data. The relationships are formulated as the enthoropy model and then the regions are allocated on the multidimension space. The asymmetry of the flows are explicitly treated. The results demonstrate the differences of interrelationship structure among the infrastructure types.

In a conjoint analysis, by applying a trade-off approach to the rank orders data of preference among pairs of attributes (i.e., profiles) obtained from consumers, utility value for each attribute level is estimated. While the trade-off approach makes few cognitive demands on the respondent and is conductive to respondent's losing their place in the table or developing some stylized pattern, just to get the job done. Most importantly, the task is unrealistic ; wreak alternatives do not present themselves for evaluation on a trade-off approach basis. In this paper, we discuss the optimal product-planning for new multiattribute products based on the utility values of attribute levels measured by the conjoint analysis. In this case the full-profiles approach is applied to the rank orders data of preference among full-profiles obtained from consumers.
