Production switching rule has been proposed as a realistic, practical aggregate production planing approach in discrete production environments where the number of shifts or workers predetermines the feasible production and workforce levels. This paper presents a mixed-integer programming problem that determines optimal production, workforce, and target inventory levels while minimizing relevant costs over the planning horizon under the perfect demand forecast. Since no proper algorithms are available to solve the formulated problem, a simple heuristic algorithm is also proposed. Two numerical examples showed encouraging results of the heuristic.

Although the inspection is to control the fraction defective in the lot inspected, it often appears that the lot quality characteristic is distributed according to a continuous distribution. In this paper, we propose the design procedures for rectifying inspection plans by variables with a single sampling plan under the condition that the lot quality characteristic is distributed according to a normal distribution. When variance is unknown, by using Hamaker's result that the OC curve for unknown variance plans is adequately derived from a normal approximation, we present the design procedures in which the more complicated use of the noncentral t-distribution can be avoided. It is illustrated that the average total inspection can be economized by using the proposed inspection plans.

In this paper, we examine quantitative and qualitative changes with the passage of time in consumer expectations for the quality of three consumer durable goods, and explore the trends and nature of such changes based on the data from five surveys over 12 years. Results show the derived structure of consumer evaluation factors is somewhat stable, but is strongly influenced over a long time span by the introduction of new product models. Also, in addition to an overall rising trend of consumer expectations due to broad sociopsychological influences, the results suggest a periodicity of six to twelve years in the change of the relative importance placed on the evaluation factors derived.

It is proposed to design single sampling plan by attributes for integrated units based on compound binomial-poisson distribution. It is assumed that an integrated unit is composed of m(≥2) parts and is classified as "defective" if at least one of m parts is defective, The information of the acceptance number of integrated units and that of parts are both used for acceptance criteria. In this paper, the compound distribution of the number of defectives of integrated units and the number of defectives of composed parts is derived. When the strength of sampling plan, say (p_0,α, p_1,β), is given, a sample size and both acceptance number of integrated units and that of parts which satisfy the strength are determined. Furthermore, the sampling tables for sampling inspection plan of integrated unit are given, and sample sizes of the proposed plans are compared to those of plans which are only based on the information of number of defectives of integrated units.

GT lines are classified as those in which all moves are of either an in-sequence or a by-passing type and those which contain backward movements. The former group is referred to as GT flow-lines, and a method of the group formation is discussed in this paper. First, the problem to determine such a part family that has a production volume enough for forming a line out of object parts, and that minimizes the number of machines to be arranged in the line (part family formation problem) is picked up, and this problem is formulated as a 0-1 integer programming problem (P). Next, after indicating a procedure to determine the lower bound of (P), a knapsack problem is solved to show the method which strengthens the lower bound. Finally, conditions of the branch and bound method for determining the optimal solution of (P) are confirmed and effectiveness of the method is proved by computational experience.

The authors propose a system to analyze the effect of sales promotions by neural networks and fuzzy inference. We firstly make the neural network learn the dynamics between promotional activities and sales quantities based on retail store level scanner data, and use it for the modeling of consumer's purchase behavior. Secondly, we analyze some effects of sales promotions to sales quantities and sales profits by using the neural network after learning as the "knowledge" of consumer's purchase behavior. Moreover, a fuzzy inference is used to evaluate the promotional effective balance between sales quantities and sales profits for each sales promotion. Finally, we apply the system to the instant coffee market as a typical example, and discuss the promotional balance and some effects for various promotions.

Conventional Kanban system requires an assumption that no defect exists in a container delivered to the succeeding station. In this paper, the effect of the defective parts in a container on the optimal operation planning is analyzed. The analysis leads to the optimal order interval (R^*) and the optimal container capacity (u^*) which minimize the total operating costs including the shortage inventory cost per hour due to the defective parts in the fixed order interval Kanban system. The result shows that u^* must always be smaller than the optimal container capacity under the conditions of no defective part.
