Foremen in a sewing shop carry out a process analysis task to make it possible to produce an ordered lot on an assembly line. The way that a foreman performs such a task for a newly released order is by remembering the manufacturing process of a product whose design features are similar to those of the said product. There are two types of information about design features ; explicit ones and ambiguous ones. To handle the latter design features, the concept of a fuzzy set is necessary. In order to permit labor saving, this paper presents preliminary information about the framework of a fuzzy knowledge-based system based on a learning model by analogy for the process analysis task in the sewing shop.

The coefficients of mixed integer programming (MIP) problems have fuzziness in many cases. And the speed-up in calculation by a computer is very useful. In this paper, we propose a parallelized branch and bound method for solving MIP problems with fuzzy coefficients to shorten the calculation time. And we propose also how to solve the problems in parallel under the UNIX network environment, which is used widely. Moreover, we develop the C program which implements the proposed parallelized process for the MIP problems with trapezoidal fuzzy coefficients, and compare the calculation time to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper we consider multi-stage, multi-product production, inventory and transportation systems including lot production process, and develop a mathematical model for a pull type ordering system. As the model is formulated as an integer programming problem, we propose an approximate procedure to obtain a suboptimal solution in short time using a mathematical programming package. Finally we show a computational example of the model applied to an actual automobile parts manufacturer, verify the effectiveness of the solution procedure and clarify the applicability of the proposed model.

If the energy function of an artificial neural network system is expressed in quadratic form based on the objective function and constraints of a combinatorial optimization problem, it is possible to get a solution using the equations of system dynamics ; a special algorithm is not required. However, even though the subenergy functions based on the constraints can be expressed in quadratic form, minimizing the subenergy functions does not necessarily give a feasible solution satisfying the constraints of the optimization problem. This shows that neural network systems have a limit in their applicability. In this paper we propose new neurons, with an immunological rejective function, so as to extend the applicability of neural network systems. These neurons have the function of rejecting the violation of constraints. We apply these neurons to scheduling problems and discuss their capabilities.

A quantitative method for analyzing the characteristics of communication networks in an organization is described, in which a framework model is proposed to unifying the learning curve models that were discriminated in terms of obstruction probability in the past study. Moreover the time to process the subject and the quantity of errors for the subject by using the estimates of the learning effects obtained from the proposed models are estimated. The high multiple correlation coefficients and estimates of the parameters in meeting the actual data are obtained through our analyses, and the validity of the models us verified.

This paper first identifies the major three obstacles to an ideal logistics system, which are long lead time, demand uncertainty and number of stages in decision making. In order to assess the impact of the three obstacles, system inventory levels which demanded for a given service level are formulated for three different models called independence, information sharing and integration model respectively. Through the numerical analysis, the following suggestions are derived. The information sharing should be fully exploited in particular under longer lead time condition. At the same time, continuous reduction of bottle-neck lead time in terms of replenishment cycle is most essential object of efficient logistics system.

Effectiveness of a multiobjective scheduling method using complex random sampling (MOCRSS) proposed in the previous papers mainly depends on the set of initial schedules. In this paper, the procedure for generating initial solutions is revised for efficiently finding a set of nondominated schedules with high accuracy. The results of some numerical experiments on a two-objective, two machine flowshop scheduling made it clear that the revised MOCRSS could generate a set of nondominated schedules with high accuracy more efficiently than the existing MOCRSS.

This paper proposes a neural-network-based approximate classification method to cope with classification problems with no clear cut-off boundaries between classes. The proposed method assumes that a boundary area (i.e., fuzzy boundary) divides the pattern space into decision areas of the given classes. First, the concept of approximate classification based on the possibility theory is introduced to multiclass classification problems. Next, a learning algorithm for the possibility analysis is proposed by modifying the back-propagation algorithm of multilayer feedforward neural networks. The decision area of each class and the boundary area between classes are derived from the output values of the neural network trained by the proposed learning algorithm. Last, the learning ability to training data and the generalization ability to test data are examined for the proposed approximate classification method by computer simulations on the iris data of Fisher.

Both delay-time and work-cycle time distributions of a generalized model of conveyor-serviced production station (Generalized CSPS) are concretely obtained, and the policy RdSRP for Generalized CSPS is discussed from a view of the above two work-time distributions. By numerical considerations, the following results are found : First, from a comparison of distributions, the policy RdSRP is superior to the policy SdSRP. Second, it is such a look-ahead interval (or time-range) that minimizes a variance of delay-times or a tail probability of work-cycle times. In conclusion, the policy RdSRP is superior in not only mean value but also variance.

This paper deals with the detection procedure of outliers. The difference between the order statistics i.e., Irwin type test statistics, is employed. A new outlier detection procedure which avoids the danger of masking and swamping is proposed and the percentage points are given as α=0.01,0.05,0.10,n=3(1)20. The power of the proposed procedure and the sequential tests by Grubbs or Dixon with several outliers are examined through the Monte Carlo experiments. The results of this study show that the proposed procedure have a high power for the case where many outliers are present.
