In this paper, the scheduling problem of a multistage production system has been investigated, based upon the minimization of the total tardiness. The multistage process is transformed as each independent single-stage process so that the branch-and-bound method is easily used for determining the optimal schedule. Then, the branch-and-bound algorithm is developed and by solving the numerical examples, the effectiveness and validity of the algorithm are proven.

In this paper, we present an algorithm for solving the multidimensional Zero-One Knapsack problem. In this algorithm, we utilize several informations obtained by solving the one-constraint Zero-One Knapsack problem with surrogate constraint to search for the optimal solution of a problem. The computational results indicate that; (1) The execution time of this algorithm is equal to or shorter than that of Geoffrion's algorithm; (2) In the latter cases, the execution time is shortened by 15% to 75%, depending on the problem.

The lateral posture model in manual materials handling, which is made from x and y coordinate plane, can be used for the numerical definition of posture for working man and analysis of body movements. But the model is so complex that the computation takes a long time. A code number can be used instead of the posture model. The coding methods calssify the posture into artificial and natural taxonomy. Here is discussed the two coding methods and their application.

In order to make up a distribution of sample mean drawn from a finite population which consists of quantitative values, it has been necessary to perform every possible sampling experiments. In this report, a theoretical formula is derived in order to obtain this distribution. This formula presents a probability function of sample mean, deriving from multinomial or multivariate-hypergeometric distribution theory in sampling with or without replacement, which, from several examples, differed much from the one obtained from the normality assumption, especially in sampling without replacement. On the statistical inference, this procedure will help to a higher precision than when a normal distribution is assumed.

Based on previous reports on designing buffer capacity, the mixed-model assembly line is classified into two types, that is, Model I and Model II. For these models, relations which illustrate the value of the work zone (for Model I) or the latest work end point (for Model II) at each station are considered. Using these relations, equations which represent the value of the work allowance at each station and the maximum work congestion at the assembly line are formulated for each model. Also relations between the cycle time of conveyer line and the work allowance or the overtime work are specifid.

The diagnosis of acceptance or rejection of a lot by sampling inspection can be treated as a pattern recognition problem. In this paper some contributions of the pattern recognition methodology to design of sampling plan are described and illustrated. After a brief description of pattern recognition especially the Bayes' diagnosis rule, a procedure is presented for design of single sampling inspection by attributes. The recommended procedure enables us to find an optimal sampling plan which insures the specified consumer's risk (or producer's risk) and minimizes the average loss due to misclassification of a lot.

This paper considers the problem of group scheduling under the two kinds of criteria-the minimum total completion time and the minimum weighted mean flow time. It is supposed that jobs are classified into several groups on the basis of group technology (GT). In this group scheduling problem, optimal decision is made as to sequence of group and sequence of jobs in each group. The basic theorems determining the optimal group schedule are proved on a single production stage. On multiple production stage, algorithms determining the optimal group schedule are proposed, and their effectiveness is verified by the numerical experiment.

In Bayesian Decision Task, human behaviour does not fit with the theoretical optimal strategy. From the results of probability inference experiments, Edwards assumed that subjects underestimate the diagnostic impact value of the data in the task, and he has presented a behavioural model. However, through comparison of the theoretically overestimated (underestimated) strategy with the subjects' purchasing-behaviour in this research, it is suggested that subjects overestimate the impact value. The suggestion is examined by the method based on the amount of information purchased by the subjects in the task, and also by the method based on the order of the subjectively optimal amount of the information purchasing. The non-metric multidimensional scaling is used in the latter.

The present study, which covers practical investigations into the nature of the Tandem-compound-type office activities and capabilities of clerical workers, is intended 1) to present a basic theory for determining the required manpower from expectations of the input-time and output-time intervals of movements of clerical units (i.e., forms and reports) to and from the office, and 2) to present a new method for determining adequate requirements for clerical manpower, a method characterized by a combination of the deterministic and probability methods.
