This paper is a comprehensive introduction of the Fault Tree Analysis Method. The F.T.A. has primarily been applied for the purpose of the safety analysis of machine. This paper shows, with an example, the applicability of the F.T.A. to the safety analysis of man machine systems. The F.T.A. model is constructed with events and logical gates. Events are connected by logical gates into a tree structure. In this paper human behavior and the condition which causes human behavior are treated as events.

The purpose of this paper is to propose the system matrix method for design of production management systems. The system matrix is composed of (i) composition, operation; (j) output, process, input; (k) function, man-machine; (l) set, degree, interaction of elements. Each column in the matrix is discribed as e_<ijkl>. At first, we set up the suffix to e_<1111>. So, we should make up the list of functions about output composition. And then, we change the suffix in the order that suffix l is first, next k, and j, last i. Such ordering rule is important for a systematic approach to thinking about systems design.

Some important characteristics of the conveyor-serviced production station (CSPS) are here discussed from a view of queueing theory. First, under Poisson arrival and general service, the mean overflow number of units, E(η), is obtained in the case of operating policies SUP, SRP and SdSRP. Next E(η) and the mean delay-time per unit produced, E(D), are given under regular arrival, general service and SUP. As main results, a linear relation of E(η) and E(D) and the design criteria that λ^<-1>(mean arrival time) : μ<-1>(mean service time) : c (time-range) =1 : ln 2 : ln 2 are found.

In case of analysis of complex systems, it is necessary to use a macroscopical method in which systems are viewed from the standpoint of a wide field of vision. Systems aggregation is a useful method for this purpose. A new method of systems aggregation is proposed in this paper, in which the concepts of fuzzy sets are introduced in order to describe fuzziness in systems.

In an assembly system with sublines, the production efficiency is affected by interferences between stations and between lines. These interferences, which are mainly caused by processing time fluctuation or station breakdown, can be reduced by providing in-process buffers. In this work, Markovian process models of three assembly systems are built and analyzed. Results of numerical analysis shows how the production efficiency of the system depends on processing times, failure rates, repair times and the capacity of in-process buffers.

The modified chi-square method as well as the minimum chi-square method is well known as a method of estimation of parameters in a population. By referring to these methods, a new estimation method is explored which is suitable for the data consisting of a cumulative frequency. A method using appropriate variable transformation is also proposed. The application of this method enables us to reduce the problem of estimation to easier one and the estimates to the closed forms. The algorithm is described in detail, and illustrated by two examples.

In most studies of replacement policies up to this time, such a single criterion as maximizing the expected availability or minimizing the expected cost, per unit good time was used. It assumed the full operation of equipment. In this paper, a periodic replacement policy is proposed under the criterion minimizing the expected cost per unit good time subject to the scheduled availability. Equipment with posterior inspections and penalty cost occurring from the failure time to the replacement time is considered here. This policy is compared with the policy maximizing the expected availability. An index clarifing the relations is found out.

The purpose of this paper is to present a model explaning the selecting process of plant location by industries, that is, how each industry will select the locational area and how the plants will be distributed. Then, in order to check the validity of this model, we apply it to the estimated amount of shipment of products by prefecture regarding 9 industries. Consequently, we confirm this model reasonable and useful.

Frequent refinements of work systems make their EDP section busy to update the corresponding softwares. This paper presents a method for integrated programming and its imlementation on computer, provide that each program consists of three components : layout (file and data structure), logic unit (program skeleton) and item handling (procedure or options to characterize each program). With this concept, the system named FAST1 was implemented for Fuji Bank and goes well through the division of labor which has been organized corresponding to FAST1-structure. It enables programmer's task much reduced. Thus, the systematic production and control of software are now possible.

In a two-stage lot production system, it is inevitable that idle times arise at either stage because of the differences in set-up times, or lot sizes of the items produced. This paper presents an analysis of the characteristics of idle time of a two-stage lot production system, and the scheduling procedures for accepting some special orders to control the frequency and duration of idle time by the methods of 1) changing lot sizes, 2) shifting the production starting times of standard items produced according to some forecast or by executing both 1) and 2) at the same time.
