For a part withdrawn from a supplier in a JIT system, its withdrawal cycle should be determined with consideration for a social cost. In this paper, we first model a supplier Kanban system with a stochastic demand and a variable withdrawal cycle. Next, we derive a stable condition of the system from an analysis of a backlogged demand and obtain a generating function of its limiting (equilibrium) distribution. These results lead to an algorithm for finding an optimal number of supplier Kanbans and an optimal withdrawal cycle that minimize a total expected cost including the social cost.

In food industries, chemical industries and others, many characteristics of products depend on the proportion of components of products. The design for studying the relation between the characteristic and the proportion is called "mixture experiments". Data in mixture experiments have the restriction that the sum of mixture components variables is 1. Then mixture experiments are not experiments with orthogonality. In this paper, the method for finding the property of main effects in the additive model with useful contrasts for estimable non-linear components is proposed.

For a manufacturing firm, choice of depreciation methods affects not only its distributable income accounts but also its finance for a long time. This suggests that a firm's choice of depreciation methods is closely related with its long-range management planning. The criteria for choosing depreciation methods proposed in this study are based on the long-range management planning and its goal. These criteria are functions of productivity, growth rates, financial cost, and useful life of assets concerned. As a result of comparison between every firm's criterion function value and its depreciation method chosen, it is statistically proved that a firm actually chooses its depreciation method based on its long-range management planning.

In Japan, a quarter of national population is expected to be composed of over 65 year-old persons in the near future, and therefore it is a key point for the enterprises to utilize senior citizens effectively, major part of whom have not been employed so far. We propose a model for evaluating employment of senior citizens which is available in examining the possibilities of extension of the retiring age and increasing proportion of senior employees in terms of ability-cost performances. The present study applies this model to factory workers, and discusses the possibilities and problems for stimulation of the senior citizens employment.

Domestic tire replacement demand is explained by a stochastic model using 3 distributions : car replacement, tire replacement and annual running distance distributions. At the first development, though the value of the 3 distributions are fixed throughout the range (fixed factor model), the results meet the real data very well. But, as the model treats a long term in which rapid social changes are involved, the difference between the model and the real data became significant, and adequate model revising in requested. The model is expanded so that the 3 distributions may vary reflecting the social changes (variable factor model), and this results in a reasonable forecasting of the model. This paper treats the stochastic model construction, estimation of the parameters, comparison of the simulation results with the real data and the revision process of the model.

This paper studies a design problem of the optimal buffer of a generalized conveyor-serviced production station (Generalized CSPS). The problem is first formulated as that of minimizing the sum of delay-and-overflow cost and buffer cost, with respect to the look-ahead interval, c_N, maximum in-process inventory N. Second, under a given planning period, T_0,it is found by simulation that the optimal buffers, c^*_N and N^*, exist when a design factor, ε, is 0≨ε<1. Third, the behaviors of the optimal buffers are considered under some input parameters. Finally, a design procedure is given, and its introductory conditions and effects are numerically showed.

Tool replacement models for automatic machining centers are developed. If a tool fails during the cut, the workpiece become defective and the down time for system adjustment and the cutting of another workpiece occurs. Two models introducing a tool life distribution are formulated from a statistical point of view using the minimum-production time and cost criteria. Numerical results show that the economical tool replacement for the tool with large life-variance requires earlier replacement than that of a tool with small variance.

To maintain process mean at a target value, process may be adjusted based on sample data. The variation of mean is swelled by excessive adjustment, however, subtle action can not reset the mean at the target level when the process mean has shifted. Therefore, in this paper, a loss function of linear adjustment based on the latest sample is derived and studied to search optimal adjustment rules, in the case of the amount of process change is random variable.

The purpose of the present article is to clarify the effect of job involvement on depressive symptoms in the work place. The survey was carried out by asking 209 male workers. Data analysis was made by using 179 respondents. The results obtained were as follows : (1) Job involvement did not show any effect of directly suppressing depressive symptoms ; (2) A buffering effect of job involvement on depressive symptoms was observed among the subjects aged in the 40's and over ; (3) The moderation of stressfulness in the work environment was attributed to job involvement in the subjects aged in the 20's. Under the stressful situations, depressive symptoms were significantly suppressed by job involvement.

It is desirable to place more importance on customers' requirements found through direct marketing, customers' satisfaction surveys, and so on. In this paper we consider effects on sales of word-of-mouth (WOM) information, particularly customers' complaints. WOM as an important information medium has become an important factor for the improvement of a company's product and service images to satisfy customers' diversifying quality demands. Of course efforts are always being made to improve product quality, but we ascertain in the commodity area covered, clothing, that it is also essential for manufacturers to establish a service system that sensitively reflects customers' opinions.

In the previous papers, it is shown that the scheduling problem for the Multi-Stage Process can be reduced to the single machine scheduling problem of allotting jobs between the earliest and latest end times for each job, and a practical scale problem can be efficiently reduced to a smaller scale problem by using our reducing method of model size. This paper presents an optimization algorithm for the scheduling problem based on the Branch-and-Bound method so as to minimize the total flow time in the post-process. The branching operation using reducing method and the strong lower bound which is derived by determining the minimum total overlap time for unassigned jobs will enhance the computational efficiency. The efficiency of proposed algorithm is also shown through the numerical illustrations.
