The exclusive use of cases for teaching management has been regarded as the case method of instruction. But ecently, in the United States, the casebooks which contain cases and text, have been published, while the management textbooks which are complemeted with many cases, have been written. We must think much of business reality as well as managment principle and technique. Our business decisions are not effective without recognizing the difference of the reality.

Filtering theories are of considerable use as the basic theories for estimation problems. A brief explanation is given about the theories of the Wiener filter and the Kalman filter which are typical among these theories. the information preserving filter developed from the view-point of mutual information is also described. Some contributions of filtering theories to the field of industrial engineering are suggested.

An analysis was performed in an attempt for optimal selection of parts to be machined in a limited time available for the given machine tool by aplying the Group Technology concept. In addition, the optimal machining speeds to be utilized in manufacturing the selected parts were determined. A computational algorithm was developed for this optimal machine loading and product-mix decision as well as for determining the optimal machining speeds.

This paper presents an iterative formula for obtaining the limit X_<ij> of normal integral p_<ij>=∫^∞_x_<ij> f(t)dt when a probability p_<ij> is given. In order to generate interval scales by paired comparison judgements, the legitimate use of Thurstone-Mosteller model requires the transformation of p_<ij> to X_<ij> where p_<ij> is the probability that stimulus i exceeds stimulus j. Formerly it has been a laborious and tedious task to make the transformation from the table of stndard normal distribution. Since the iterative formula is easy to use and eliminates the numerical disadvantage, the computational procedure to establish the interval scale has fairly been simplified.

A generalized inventory-production scheme on a non-quadratic cost-criterion is determined with the intention of expanding the coverage of the previous papers. The maximum principle is especially applied to an approach to determination of an optimal production planning and safety inventory. The problem is formulated and the solution search technique is briefly indicated in the light of an illustrative example. Generally speaking, however, there exist some restrictions on inventory capacity, i.e., a prohibition of shortage, a limitation of capacity, etc. In these cases, the solution may be obtained by the penalty method.

This paper is concerned with the optimization of inventory management system for spare parts. We set up a model in (Q, r) inventory systems and draw the nomographs for minimum-cost order quantities, reorder points, safety stocks and service ratios in optimal policies which can be obtained by numerical analysis. The iteration usually necesary for simultaneous determination of an optimal policy can be eliminated by using the graphs. This graphical technique always gives us optimal policy for any forecasting errors. The effects of applying the system to the management of a plant were very clear and the management performance was improved.

In this paper we set up a transportation model which consists of single item, a single plant and multiple warehouses, and we describe an optimal transportation system for satisfying demand with restricte shipping capacity. Numerical analysis were performed for the purpose of improving the service ratio, decreasing the transportation cost and reducing the holding cost. As the results of this study, we could obtain optimal shipping quantities and minimum transportation cost. The effects of applying this system to a plant were very clear and management performance was improved.

In this paper, some experimental results are obtained from the application of probabilistic dispatching method to the static job-shop scheduling problem. The following become clear after the investigation made into the optimal parameter and the optimal number of schedules. The optimal parameter lies in the range [0.60,0.80] in case dispatching rule MWKR is used, and in [0.84,0.98] when LWKR rule is used. The range of optimal parameter for LWKR rule becomes narrow as the number of jobs per number of machines increases. It is sufficient to make 15〜25 schedules for the practical use of each rule.

Many researches in the field of Behavioral Science show that Leadership is the motivator relating to the morale and productivity of employees. In spite of this, Herzberg's M-H theory is apt to ignore Leadershp as the motivator or he concludes that Leadership is the hygiene factor. This study is an attempt to determine whether Leadership is the motivator or the hygiene factor through the M-H theory. We used the Leadership of Performance-Mentenance style of J. Misumi as Leadership measurement method, and compared the satisfier with dissatisfier of PM-style and pm-style Leadership on the basis of perception of employees.

Decision rule for painting the day's run of widgets has been studied under the assumption that a decision-maker is to decide only one color among possible colors to produce. This "widgets problem" is reviewed as an example of applicaiton of the principle of maximum entropy. The purpose of this paper is to complement the problem in the following situations : 1) Cost criterion which has been limited to the shortage cost shall be extended to a function including the holding cost.2) Product mix shall be permissible, i.e., may be painted with several colors a day.3) Correlation of colors which was ignored in the preceding papers shall be reconsidered.

This is a study on the decision of the stock level in a multi-stage inventory model based on the base stock system. The policy of this model is such that the orders with a long delivery time are filled by the goods which will be finished at the time of delivery specified by the customers. First, the order quantity and the delivery time are decided based on a certain distrbution. And the policy mentioned above assigns each order to some stages. Then, the base stock level at each stage is decided when the base stock system is applied to the series type and the branching type inventory model.
