For the purpose of studying the optimal selection policies for order selection and process control in the job-shop, this paper, first, presents a M/G/1(N) production sysmte with six representative selection policies. N is the maximum number of backlog, and distribution of the profit of orders is of a general type. Second, the mean number of accepted orders, E(u), and the expected undiscounted reward per unit produced, R_0(f, N), are obtained using Markov decision processes. Third, both common and different natures of the six selection policies are discussed, and the structure of optimal selection policies is suggested.
