As part of a study on historical development of modern heating systems, ceramic heating ovens, called Kachelofen, are presented. Kachelofen are classified into several types as architectural styles. Kachelofen have been utilized not only as room heaters, but as vital interior elements in buildings with their elaborate decorative design, especially Gothic style. Their utilizing wood as fuel enable environmentally friendly operation, regenerating market interest even today.

A high-efficiency solar cooling system is originally designed and installed in our company's branch office building. The system employs high-efficiency evacuated solar collectors and a gas-fired absorption chiller-heater customized for solar thermal energy. The proof of the system started in April, 2009. As an effect of the system, reduction of 20% is expected with primary energy consumption.

Evaporative cooling as one of the passive cooling techniques is promising from the viewpoint of global environment protection and utilization of natural environment and natural energy. The application of the roof spraying system has been mainly to the light weight building such as factories, less to the heavy weight. This paper describes the experimental results of the roof spraying system which was introduced to the relatively heavy weight RC building, changing the rate of spraying water. Further the analytically predicted effects of energy saving by means of roof spraying are described.

To realize a desirable building environment by saving energy and low global emission, the authors have been investigating passive systems in buildings where the environment is controlled biomimetically and autonomously by simulating the physiological functions of human and other organisms. An environmental harmonized `biomimetic building' has been studied. In the previous papers, evaporative cooling effect of perspiration roof of a perspirable building with the use of thermo-sensitive hydrogel was examined experimentally. This paper describes the improved evaporative cooling roof and the experimental and analytical results on passive cooling effect of the roof with the use of experimental model facility.

Chilling units are driven all year round in industrial plants that have clean rooms and buildings that have data centers, because the inside thermal load of these institutions is large. Free cooling is very effective for energy conservation of such institutions in the cold season. However, the free cooling takes not only the influence of the load but also that of the wet-bulb temperature of the outside air, so it must be controlled. In addition, saving energy is possible by changing the rotating speed of cooling tower fans, and pumps according to the thermal load and the wet-bulb temperature of the outside air. We developed an optimizing control system of free cooling.

This research has developed a GWHP system that employs a hybrid heat pump system with groundwater wells using multi heat source, groundwater and air source. This paper describes about real-scale experiments using a standing column well (SCW). The heating and cooling experiments have been conducted at Nagoya site where the groundwater level is 4 m depth and the quality of groundwater is not good. The SCW has two screens which divided by a packer and the system can automatically switch the positions of pumping and returning. The coefficient of performance (COP) of heat pump and system was calculated by the temperature of groundwater and the pumping rate. In the results, system COP of cooling was 6.5 and it of heating was 3.6.

For the high efficiency of heat pump, groundwater heat pump system (GWHP) uses groundwater as heat source which keeps annually stable temperature. However, it is difficult for only ground heat source to meet the heating and cooling loads with an annual balance. In order to optimize the operation method of GWHP systems, it is necessary to develop a system using both groundwater and air sources according to the condition of building loads. Furthermore, in intermediate season (for example, spring or autumn), in which heating and cooling loads are not so much, GWHP system is not more efficient than ASHP system according to conditions of temperature. In order to more efficiently use GWHP systems, it is necessary to develop a system using both groundwater and air sources according to the conditions of temperature and building loads. This paper describe about the method on the optimum operation for a long-term stable performance. The optimum control of temperature is considered in order to select more efficient heat source, and the method to switch pumping position is developed to prevent a clogging at pumping and returning wells.

A new concept of a ground-source heat pump system called Multiple Source and Multiple Use Heat Pump system is proposed. In this system, soil temperature is daily restored to the original state with artificial heat supply to replenish with natural recovery. And this system has higher efficiency and needs less soil volume than typical Ground Source Heat Pump system. The result shows that the proposed system is effective and suggests the form of Underground Heat Exchanger Coil Unit.

High-performance window system has become very popular in these days, however there are few performance evaluations based on a longer-term measurement in actual conditions. In this paper, thermal performance of the time variability and the seasonal variation of this window system were analyzed by the longer-term measurement in actual office buildings, using measurement methods. This paper presents the influence of blinds specification on thermal, light, view, and energy conservation performance in office ,buildings. Questionnaire and interview survey were taken to research the trends of glass facade building, and figure out advanced facade model. In addition, with thermal network model simulation, thermal performance evaluation was conducted. As results, it was found that reduction target of glass facade to cut down PAL standard 25%. Double skin facade with Low-e glass in its inner glass and ventilation opening is one of the future facade type to achieve the target in Japan.

Total future energy consumption was calculated from PAL simulated by a heat and air transfer system simulation program for building and from total glass area in the future. If increasing rate of glass area was small and "PAL=200" and "Efficient heat source system" were innovated, energy consumption from glass facade buildings was maintained at 2008 value. It was understood that innovating the method of thermal high-performance design of building facade were needed.

This paper presents effects that directional characteristics of transmitted light of blinds exerts on utilization of daylighting and energy consumption. Characteristics of upward transmitted light of blind are showed by actual measurement and simulation. And influences of daylight on room by difference of colors of blinds and employ artificial light are showed. And it is presented that blind color which takes upward transmitted light of blind achieve both energy conservation and comfortable indoor environment.

The water-diffusive tile was developed as a new exterior wall tile that provides effective mitigation of heat island phenomenon. This tile has special surface structure that scatters sprinkled water by capillarity and the tile is cooled easily by evaporation. This surface structure also makes the ivy take root easily. With cooled wall by water, the creeper was promoted rapid growth even at southern wall. In this experiment, cooling ability and ivy growth-promoting effect of this tile was confirmed. We hope that the water-diffusive tile will be one of the solutions to heat island phenomenon.

This paper shows the quantification of performance of thermal insulation of water-cooling tile and the evaporative latent heat of the tile by sprinkled water. Concerning the performance of thermal insulation, heat transfer characteristic is confirmed by CFD and the experiment. The aim of this report is to describe the thermal performance of the single story double skin facades of the ofice building constructed in 2007. This newest double skin facade system has automatic ventilation dampers and automatic venetian blinds. The field measurements in last summer recorded 15-70 air changes per hour in double skin and 0.7[kW/m] maximum reduction of the perimeter-cooling load at the east facade.

This paper presents the effect of window with wavelength selective on energy conservation. Those solar-shading blinds and films were installed on the glass window , and were measured under the practical condition. It is suggested that the window with the solar-shading blinds reduced the solar heat gain due to highly reflectivity in the near-infrared range and that adhered films to the glass pane improved shading performance without deteriorating visual environment.

We have presented the identification method of contaminant sources in any space in and around a building based on the response factor method in the previous paper. Here we confirm that a contaminant rate emitted from the cell identified by the present method approximately conserves the emission rate from any source, although the method can identify accurately time series data of the emission rate and the position when the method has the exact response factors from the source to the sensors. We illustrate the method of approximately conserving emission rates as well as examples of the identification of the source.

The sickroom could have problems of odor diffusion from the human body or the body waste, and there are many complaints from nurses and patients. Measurement procedures for pressure drop characteristic of ventilation systems' components are available in several standards or methods. However, not every single component has standard or method. At the same time, some components often have more than one method. In this study, differences of some components' pressure drop characteristic and calculation result of ventilation system's air flow rate among measuring methods, which include proposed method, are shown by based on experimental results. The result of study presents the proposed method can provide accurate air flow rate.

Accuracy of air flow measurement with using three terminal devices applying k-factor method is estimated by experimental results. The experimental tests were executed with changes in distances between the terminal devices and bend on the ducts under supply and extract conditions. Under extract conditions, result of air flow measurement shows relative error less than approximately 5% even the distance is near like as 0.5m. At the same time, results of air flow measurement without a terminal device, which can be connected to a 100mm duct, shows relative errors less than 5% under supply conditions.

This study aim is to evaluate performance of the simple smoking booth, for passive smoking prevention. In this paper, the booth is a type of all exhaust to outdoors, and maximum capacity is 4 men. In the experiment of 4 men simultaneous smoking, dust and CO concentrations on near the door were checked in line with the performance criteria of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare guidelines. In the experiment of smoker leaving from the booth, it was confirmed that there was no significant dust leakage to the outside.

Air flow rates in the duct and AHU systems were measured using tracer gas method. Influences of the gas injection positions on gas concentration distribution at the sampling section in the outlet were studied. The results showed that gas injection at just before the supply chamber box caused an unsteady data of sampling gas concentration in the case of grill type outlets. But, the average value is almost same as that of the injection at upstream including 2 elbows. In addition, some points that should be considered in the measurement were clarified.

Data centers differ from office environments in (1) the need for humidification control, (2) concerns about contamination from outdoor air sources adversely affecting data-corn equipment performance, and (3) the potential to 'provide higher supply air temperatures, which can increase economizer cycle hours. We will make simulation models and compare the advantages of each category of economizers to be also known as "free cooling." Climate is the most important variable in comparing air side and water-side economizer savings. The CRAC which allow for low pressure ratio operations, should be used to maximize economizer savings.

The effect of the economizer cycle known as the free cooling system was studied using the simulation. In order to examine the effectiveness in Japan, the map expressing the possible free cooling hours was prepared in Japan. While the economizer cycle performance is influenced with the outdoor temperature, and humidity, as well as the indoor temperature and humidity. The simulation result shows that the use of the package type air-conditioning unit expanded scope of low pressure ratio control is effective for the climatic in Japan.

In the work reported here, we investigated the items listed below to identify factors that affect the IT machine air intake temperature, focusing on the effects of machine cooling characteristics on air conditioning efficiency. 1)We created a machine cooling model that relates the temperatures in different parts, derived the parameters that affect the machine air intake temperature, and analyzed the factors that govern the machine cooling characteristics. 2)We presented a method for deter-mining the amount of air conditioning inflow that takes machine cooling characteristics into account, and evaluated the effect of machines cooling characteristics on air conditioning efficiency.

We research energy saving technology used to cool the servers and storages at data centers, which generate a markedly high amount of heat. This study examines how to reduce energy consumption in data centers. At first we explain three kinds of methods of energy saving, which are (i) energy saving of IT devices, (ii) energy saving of electrical supply systems, (iii) energy saving of air conditioning systems. After then we explain integrated management systems between IT devices and air conditioning systems. Therefore, we save more energy than stand alone systems.

The efficiency of the air-cooled packaged air condITioners is fluctuating by their state of operation status and the environmental transformation. So, we measured performance data of air condITioners installed in a data-center for a long term, and tried to grasp actual operating condiTions of data-center air condITioners. This paper presents a detailed analysis of actual operating condITions of data-center air condITioners and proposes Integrated Control systems for Efficiency Improvement.

The demand for iDCs (Internet Data Centers) is increasing because the Internet and IT systems are becoming more popular. Internet servers produce a large amount of heat. Hence, an effective ventilation system is required in server rooms. Velocity and temperature distribution in the server rooms was studied using the CFD technique. As a result, problems concerning with present Hot-/Cold-aisle-type server rooms were found.

Velocity and temperature distribution in various server rooms was studied using the CFD technique. Results of simulations were evaluated using maximum and mean values of temperature and the SVE-3 (Scale for Ventilation Efficiency). As a result, an air-conditioning system which has supply and return openings on the ceiling showed the best performance.

This paper will report the result of examining the application of the energy conservation air-conditioning system developed for a large-scale building to the small and medium-sized building. The temperature of chilled water that the energy conservation performance of the system becomes the maximum was calculated. And the result coefficient of the chiller improves about 20% by using the middle temperature chilled water. A general-purpose fan-coil unit was adopted considering the economy.

The purpose of this study is to realize features of energy efficiency of desiccant air-conditioning system for dedicated air conditioning system and propose new high efficiency application of dedicated air conditioning systems with desiccant air-conditioner. Many of advanced air conditioning systems, for example, displacement air conditioning system, etc., are intended to reduce energy for only sensitive heat conditioning or space of sensitive heat conditioning. The result show that high efficiency latent heat conditioning system by desiccant air-conditioner combined with these systems bring high efficiency of total air conditioning and advantages against these system with conventional latent heat conditioning systems.

The purpose of this study is to realize a non-condensing environment by developing a new type of desiccant air-conditioning system with lower energy consumption. In this study, a desiccant outdoor air conditioning system combined with a heat pump is proposed, and the humidification performance of this system is studied experimentally. The results show that the outlet absolute humidity increases with increasing the regeneration temperature and the air ratio(adsorption air flow rate/desorption air flow rate) , and decreasing the rotation speed of the rotor.

Using not the low temperature cold water but the middle temperature cold water as a heat source improves the efficiency of the chiller and refrigerator. However, when the middle temperature cold water is used, dehumidification becomes difficult. Therefore, the dehumidifier like the desiccant air-conditioning system is needed. This paper shows dehumidification and humidification performance of humidity conditioner in field test.

We consider that the thermal storage technology of the middle temperature area is important to enable energy conservation and the running cost decrease. Therefore it is important to know the efficiency operation and control of the thermal storage tank using the phase change material when phase change material is used as thermal energy storage materials in the middle temperature degree area. This paper shows performance of heat storage using middle-to-low temperature phase change material in field test.

A desiccant equipment has been studied for simultaneous cooling, dehumidifying and drying of air and desiccant, which constitutes air flow channels separated by a thin desiccant sheet. In-put air to dehumidify flows through channel 2 and drying air flows through channel 3 which is the reverse side of the channel 2 to desorb water and consume generated heat. Effects of temperature and flow rates of air on dehumidifying and cooling of the in-put air were analyzed theoretically. Calculated results show that the simultaneous operation of adsorption and desorption causes not only continuous dehumidifying but also cooling.

This study aims at development of desiccant filter for air-conditioning by using Wakkanai siliceous shale (WSS). To improve water adsorption ability of WSS, the chlorides was supported on WSS's surface. From the water adsorption isotherms, the amount of water adsorption of WSS supported with NaCI 5% solution increased to 120 mg/g, however that of the natural WSS was 25 mg/g at the relative humidity in the range from 40% to 70%. It was suggested that this improvement was occurred by the water transport into NaCI caused by capillary condensation of the water in the WSS pores. Furthermore, we confirmed that NaCI-supported WSS adsorbed moisture twice as much as natural WSS from the cyclic test.
