V. M. Popov's criterion is used for investigating the absolute stability of the control systems with a single continuous nonlinear element.
For the purpose of further advance in the application of Popov method for such systems, in this paper the authors discuss the general characteristics and the construction of Popov locus, which is a modified frequency response of the linear part of the system and used in graphical solution of the stability criterion. The Popov loci for several transfer functions of the systems are illustrated. It is shown that the gain margin and the phase margin as well as the stability criterion for linear control systems are obtained from the Popov locus.
