Seven cases of retropharyngeal abscess in children were treated at the author's clinic during the last 9 years (1970-1978). In the present paper, the clinical findings in these cases and their treatment are discussed.
Ages ranged from 4 months to 5 years with four cases under 1 year old. There were 3 males and 4 females. The common symptoms were fever, swelling of the neck and respiratory distress. The soft tissue X-ray film of the neck was helpful in the diagnosis. The common pathogens were β-streptococcus hemolytics A and staphylococcus aureus.
As soon as the diagnosis is established, prompt surgical incision and drainage are indicated since the increasing danger of grave respiratory distress will be expected in due time among these children.

Protection of the teeth is one of the most important problems in microlaryngosurgery. For this purpose, we introduced the use of a mouthguard made of elastic plastic. This mouthguard has the following advantages.
    1. It can be adapted well to the patient's teeth, since it was made on the model of his own teeth.
    2. It can be made within 10 minutes, using a special instrument named ERKOPRESS.
    3. It can protect even a loose teeth satisfactrily from the pressure of a suspension laryngoscope without any dental complication.
    4. It does not disturb a laryngoscopic view during the examination.

With evaluation of operation methods for laryngeal cancer in considering the preservation of the function, it is becoming important to decide whether radiotherapy should be done or an operation should be done. Therefore, it is necessary to decide precise localization and infiltration of laryngeal cancer. We improved a standard approach TV monitoring apparatus for the diagnosis of the digestive tract to get distinct radiographs. In using this technique we tried to expand the range of diagnosis by laryngography.

The occurrence rate of laryngeal adenocarcinoma is approximately 0.3-0.7% in all malignancies and especially laryngeal adenosquamous cell carcinoma is extremely rare. The only one case report is found in the literature.
A case of simultaneous occurrence of laryngeal adenosquamous cell carcinoma and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is reported.
The patient was a 56-year-old man who complained of hoarseness, dyspnea and dysphagia for approximately 3 years prior to his admission. Endoscopic examinations revealed primary double tumors in the larynx and esophagus. Biopsy specimens from both tumors showed adenosquamous cell carcinoma in the larynx and squamous cell carcinoma in the esophagus. Laryngectomy was performed for laryngeal cancer and lower esophagectomy was done for esophageal cancer. He is still alive in healthy condition for 13 months after surgery.
This is the first case report in Japan.

A miniature strain-gauge manometer using a diod transducer was developed for clinical measurement of the pharyngoesophageal intraluminal pressure. A preliminary observation on 10 normal subjects revealed that high pressure waves (P-wave for peristaltic after Cohen) were consistently found at the levels of the velopharynx and hypopharynx. This method has proved to have several advantages compared with the catheter perfusion technique.

In Japan only 19 cases of tuberculosis of the esophagus have been reported since 1914, and twenty-five percent of the cases have been detected by roentgenologic studies and esophagoscopies with tissue biopsy. A case of tuberculosis of the esophagus is presented in a 49-year-old male complaining of sore throat and progressive difficulty in swallowing. The routes of infection and the modes of extension in lymphatic system in this particular case are discussed. The rarity of the lesion and the necessity of repeated biopsies are emphasized. Medical treatment for systemic infection appeared to be effective in this case.

A 16-months old boy was admitted to Jichi Medical Hospital with severe inspiratory dyspnea which had occurred after severe cough attack during supper. Physical findings and X-ray findings strongly suggested a foreign body in the left bronchus. Bronchoscopy was performed under general anesthesia and a large branching cast (4.5cm in the maximum length, 3mm in the maximum diameter, whitish-gray and elastic) was removed from the left main bronchus. Its shape and size well corresponded to the lumen of the left bronchus of this age.
From its microscopical findings, it was assumed that this bronchial cast was a product of his own bronchial secretion under several pathological conditions.
We referred to the previous reports on plastic bronchitis, mucoid impaction of the bronchus and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, and concluded that our case was to be classified as a type of mucoid impaction of the bronchus.

Heterotaxia is a transposition of the entire or a part of the internal organs in the form of the so-called reflecting position in a mirror. Heterotaxia is often combined with some malformations. The present case complained of dysphagia due to esophageal malformation which was revealed by clinical examinations using the X-ray movie technique. A discussion was made on the esophageal abnormality associated with heterotaxia, which has rarely been reported in literature.
