    Freezing behavior of cross-linked polymer gels was studied mainly by differential scanning calorimetry. Heat evolution during warming, due to ice crystallization, was sometimes observed below 0°C following precedent cooling to -50°C. It was found, further, that water compartmentalized by the cross-linked network structure remains unfrozen during cooling when the size of the compartments is appropriately small, and that it is the unfrozen compartmentalized water which crystallizes during subsequent warming. The mechanism of anomalous ice crystallization observed during warming was, then, investigated relating to change of the polymer network structure. In this process, it became clear that not only the size of the compartments but also continuity of water between adjacent compartments and flexibility of polymer chains affect freezing behavior of gels. These three factors seem, however, to be interrelated with each other via the density of cross-links of polymers. Therefore, it seems to be necessary to analyse characteristic of compartmentalized water more closely for the clarification of the freezing mechanism of gels. Moreover, the importance of the concept of compartmentalized water in gels, which may form a phase intermediate between continuous and discrete phases, was pointed out in this paper.

    Some recent developments of the thermodynamic studies on the multi-state thermal transitions of globular proteins are reviewed. Enphasis has been placed to the statistical mechanical basis and new methods of the scanning calorimetry data analysis for the multi-state system. In the analyses, a thermodynamic state is defined as an ensemble of the microstates of the system, assuming the heat capacity function and two integral constants. Upon these assumptions, the multi-state system can be analyzed by deconvolution method even when the system includes self-dissociation/association process, using the relation between the partition function (or molar fraction function) and the enthalpy function. The obtained thermodynamic parameters are refined by non-linear least squares fitting. By the methods, the thermal transitions of porcine pepsinogen at various pH values are analyzed to be four-state transitions, and the thermal transition of Vibrio parahaemolyticus hemolysin at pH7.0 are estimated to be three-state transition including dimer-monomer equilibrium.

    Status quo of the application of thermal analysis techniques to the appraisal and quality control of electrical and electronic materials is reviewed. Such thermal analysis techniques as TG, DTA, DSC, TMA, EGA, TSC are dealt with, whereas such electrical and electronic materials as enameled magnet wires, varnishes, epoxide resins, thermoplastic resins including cross-linked polyethylenes, thermosetting resins, mineral base transformer oils, ZnO varistor, rotating machinery insulation systems, printed circuit boards, solder glasses, photoresists, carbon fiber reinforced plastics, electronic ceramics, are investigated by use of the above-mentioned techniques. By taking advantage of these collected data, it is suggested that one can provide a data-base for electrical and electronic materials. Furthermore, it is reasonable to say that when one should develop a new material, one could adopt most suitable thermal analysis technique for its appraisal, referring to the collected data-base. The authors lay particular emphasis on applying extensively these thermal analysis techniques for developing new electronic materials.
