All of 1,620 first contact patients who visited the Department of operative dentistry and endodontics, Kyushu Dental College Hospital, from April, 2000 to March, 2002, were analyzed in order to make clear the characterization of first-appointed patients, and sorted them by age, sex, residing area, chief complaint, introduction, diagnosis, and treatment. The total 1,620 first-appointed patients consisted of 582 males (35.9%) and 1,038 females (64.1%). By age, the largest group was patients in the fifties (22.1%), and second group was sixties (17.6%). Groups of patients at ages from 20 to 69 were 84.5% of all. Patients from Kitakyushu city showed 71.9% and Fukuoka prefecture showed 91.0% of total number. The ratio of introduction from outside of this hospital and other clinics of this hospital were 16.2% and 27.4% respectively. The patients who had familly doctor (dentist) were two thirds of patients without introduction. Patients diagnosed as having a disease related to endodontics, operative dentistry or periodontics were calculated to be 44.3%, 25.8% and 23.3%, respectively. During the three years period, the total endodontic treatments were 36.7%, and restorative treatments and periodontic treatments were 20.1% and 15.4% respectively. Re-treatment ratio was as high as 64.0%. In many cases, re-treatment is necessary today and the dental treatments should be reconsidered for a better result.
