This paper deals with the identification of the clays (kaolin, sericite, roseki-clay, hydrated halloysite and others) coated on papers by using the X-ray diffractometer with Geiger counter. In the preliminary experiments, the X-ray diffraction intensity curves of clays, clay-contained films and handcoated papers (non-supercalendered and supercalendered) were examined and it was found as follows :
(1) the intensities of X-ray diffraction patterns vary with the orientation of clays and
(2) the X-ray diffraction patterns of the pigments filled in original papers conform to those of coated clays. If care is given to these points, this method may be concluded to be very valuable to identify the clays coated on commercial papers, even in Japan where various kinds of clays are used.
