We will report the operating experience of Bel bond Former installed in 1984 and E.N.P in 1991 in L-1 machine.

Akita mill, Tohoku Paper Co., Ltd. has continued up the value-added ladder with the installation of its first coater and new paper machine to food it.
In 1970 the Akita mill was built and then in 1972 the first linor board machine, L-1, was started. In 1990 the new paper machine, N 1, which is providing the base paper and the new coater were installed.
We give a description of the summary of coating operation.

Kanzaki mill of New Oji Paper Co., Ltd. has installed GlossTrol, Measurex on No. 5 super calender for coated free paper in April 1992.
Our aim is to improve consistency of quality and to reduce production cost, with maintaining current values of paper properties.
At the initial stage, some adjustment of related equipments and change of a way of operating were required. thereafter we have established the proper operating conditions and achieved the projected results.
Herein we introduce our operating experience of it for two years.

IHI-VOITH has developed a new headbox with Module Jet. In this new headbox, the CD basis weight profile is controlled by locally changing the stock consistency across the machine width. The conventional headbox depends on their adjustable slice lip to control it, therefore the fiber orientation profile is changed accordingly. Only Module Jet can control the CD basis weight profile and the fiber orientation profile independently.
Module Jet is better applied to gap former headbox and multi-layer headbox because of its simple top lip structure.
The first Module Jet successfully started up at Munkedal PM 5 (Sweden) in January 1994, and then the order of Module Jet has been 15 units.

With diversification of instrumentation equipment, the more sophisticated maintenance technology is required to keep its reliability high and to minimize its life cycle costs. This report will introduce diagnostic technology which consists of “Environmental analysis”, “System deterioration analysis” and “System life time analysis”, which aim to maintain good environmental conditions for equipment installed in control rooms, to implement “Condition based maintenance” and to determine equipment's replacement timing.

The paper presents four issues. The 1st is the introduction of the new web-tension control method which is useful for the control of paper-machine and versatile converting machines. It was introduced in the 1993 edition of “FADUM REPORT” that ABB/AccuRay Smart Color Sensor and Color Control System was able to only give the best color measurement and control system for paper machine application among the suppliers who had provided color sensor and control system.
AccuRay Smart Color Sensor with high accuracy and high Inter Instrument Agreement and Color Control help to eliminate color difference between top and bottom surfaces and give stabler color quality on a paper making process. Furthermore, AccuRay Color Control can be adapted to various paper operating conditions, and the control performance is improved by the unique color dye calibration technique in applying to various color shades with variety of color dyes.
The actual use of the Smart Color Sensor and Control System for multi color application in Japan has given the excellent results of stabler color quality, minimizing shade change time and saving usage of color dye. By using AccuRay color control, machine tenders, who are not expert of color/dye, was able to get color matching and shade change with ease of work.

We will introduce the fluidized-bed type sludge boiler in Kushiro Mill, Nippon paper industries, which has capacity to handle paper sludge, 280 BDt/day. This boiler started operating in December 1992. Since then it has been running stably. It provide more electric power for this mill, and contributes to increase stationary electric power-supply. The characteristic of this boiler is to combust paper sludge, wood bark, waste wood and others as fuel. This paper describes operating experience of this boiler especially the early trouble, the countermeasure for erosion and NOx, the condition of recent operation etc….

Experience on the introduction of non-catalytic NOx reduction system based on aqueous urea into the heavy oil boiler is discussed.
Key conditions for this system are 8501, 150°C flue gas temperature, 0.1 second minimum reaction time, and sufficient mixing of aqueous urea and NOx.
Change of the position of aqueous urea spray nozzle, introduction of slime control to prevent the clogging of the spray nozzle and others allow the smooth running of the system at 3040% NOx reduction rate for more than 2 years since the introduction of the system.

A gas turbine power plant was introduced into Niigata Mill in Hokuestu Paper Mills Ltd. in 1993 in order to reduce energy cost. Our operating experiences over about 1 year are described in this paper. This power plant enable us to obtain an independent electric power production source in such a short period.
We adopted the state of the art heavy-duty and hight temperature, which enabled us to recover steam with a high temperature and pressure. In addition, by utilizing an existing steam turbine plant efficiently, the mill energy cost could be lowered successfully.

As an example at recent Co-generation system for industry use, we introduce its characteristic and operational result of Repowering system with exhaust gas reburning which was first applied in Japan. The repowering system is composed of power boiler and steam turbine which were in use, and of 4 MW class heavy-duty gas turbine set newly. The power boiler was reformed to convert heavy oil into city gas, and for conduction gas turbine exhaust gas. This system produces reduction of energy use about 15%, and of NOx, CO
2 emission about 30%.

Deinking Technology has been rapidly improved specially in the field of hardware, such as High Consistency Pulping, Fine Slot Screening, Dispersing, and Post-Flotation etc.. However Almost all of the deinking process are still operated under Alkali base, which is still common technology for the deinking.
In order to improve sticky problems, Aikawa has recommended two loops deinking system which consists of Neutral, Room Temperature loop for the first half of the system and Alkali, High Temperature loop for the latter half of the system since several years ago. In Europe, very recently, the first Neutral deinging system was started in an actual paper mill, which shows some advantages to protect the pollution of environment and to save production cost in spite of some disadvantages. This paper shows these advantages and problems for the Neutral Deinking Technology.

Recycling of white grade waste-paper is one of the important criteria in paper recycling. The fiber length distribution of the deinked pulp is very similar to that of hardwood bleached Kraft pulp (L-BKP). The ink was efficiently removed during flotation process and the brightness of the pulp was about 80% after final washing. The strengths of pulp are lower than that of L-BKP but it is strong enough to blend this pulp to various grades. This plant is also equipped with white water treatment device which allows the less fresh water usage for whole process.

In 1988, Mishima Mill installed the pressurized groundwood (PGW) pulp plant and two years later expanded the PGW production capacity by 100 VD to 300 T/D.
With the erection of the PGW plant, a two-stage peroxide bleach plant consisting of medium consistency in the first stage, and high consistency in the second stage was also installed to produce bleached PGW of which brightness is up to 77% Hunter.
In this paper, operating experience of the PGW bleach plant will be described.

A new polysulfide generation process was jointly developed by Mitsubishi paper mills, limited and Chiyoda corporation. The first system was installed at Mitsubishi paper's Shirakawa mill in 1987. The newest system was installed at Nippon paper's Ishinomaki mill and it has been successfully operated since September 1994.
The process can provide many advantages to conventional Kraft pulp mills, such as increasing pulp yield, reducing Kappa number, lowering the lime kiln load and reducing the boiler load. All of these benefits have been confirmed during mill operation.

Prior to 1988, the Suzukawa Mill of Daishowa Paper Manufacturing Company Limited had three causticizing lines. In 1988, two of these lines were phased out and replaced by one new line designed by AHLSTROWM Limited.
This project was undertaken to improve the productivity and cost effectiveness of the causticizing operation. The white liquor capacity of the new line is 4, 300 m
3 per day and the newly-installed 106 meter kiln has a calcination capacity of 350 tonnes per day.
The new line is controlled by a fuzzy logic control system supplied by F. L. S. Japan. Daishowa regards the installation as highly successful in recognition of its 5 years of stable operation.
This paper covers the operating parameters of the new causticizing line and the fuzzy logic control system. Also discussed are the importance of lime mud quality control and the challenge of control of scale in the system.

CENIBRA produces approximately 350, 000 ADT/year of bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp at their mill in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and all of their pulpwood is supplied by their company-owned eucalyptus forests of which the regular cutting period is seven years. The area of the company-owned forests is about 156, 000 ha as of January of 1994, out of which about 88, 000 ha is a planting area with 89.6% of
E. grandis.
The planting area occupies only the 50% level of the forest, because the protection of environment has resulted in leaving 20% of the forests as a forest reserve and in addition the forests located in the shores of rivers, lakes and swamps, and slopes as an eternally reserved forests. Also thoughtful consideration has been taken on native species of trees, birds and so on. Now, afforestation and environment protection has become an very important issue inseparable as Siamese twins.

The present status of high performance papers, i. e., engineered papers, advanced papers, highly processed papers that are being produced in Japan are overviewed in this report. A comprehensive survey of highly value-added papers was conducted by High Performance Paper Society and its report was published recently. The function of these papers were classified into ten categories. As for merchandised high performance papers, the top three in descending order are heat-resisting paper, electrical insulating paper, adhesive and released paper.
For merchandising high performance papers, their R & D have to be knowledge-intensive as well as technology-intensive. Since the market size is limited, the companies producing high performance papers should concentrate on their own fields. To strengthen the companies's competitiveness and to make globally inroads into overseas markets, it is desirable to form a production complex of high performance papers. The future development of high performance papers should go along with the notion of “earth friendly”.

We have been supplying a large number of fault inspection systems mainly for paper mills.
Improvement of these systems have been made in fault data analysis trough fault processing by classifying inspection result by the darkness or size of the fault and making positional information.
The next requirement is what the fault is.
Newly developed FAULT IMAGE SYSTEM reply to this requirement, that is from the field of paper mill.
We are expecting this system will make inspection system really useful one.

One of the most significant advance in fine paper forming has been the shift from fourdriniers to hybrid formers, which enable curl and formation to be much better controlled than on fourdriniers. But both fourdrinier and hybrid formers suffer from free surface instabilities which increase with speed. Paper quality and runnability often start to suffer at speeds lower than their limitations.
On the other hand, Gap formers have been used for news and specialty fine paper grades because of higher speed potential and better control of curl than hybrid formers. However, gap formers have limitations of paper grades owing to limited drainage capacity.
This paper will introduce “Speed-Former MB”, which has been developed as the latest roll and blade gap former concept to obtain the best solution for much improved fine paper forming.
