As a result of bacteriological and immunological studies on the respiratory infections in 121 cases of patients with lung cancer, the following results were obtained
The rate of respiratory infections in lung cancer was 38.0 percents; 33.9% in primary lung cancer and 4.1% in metastatic lung cancer. In epidermoid carcinoma, pulmonary infections were observed in 23 (54.8%) of 42 cases. Pathogens were mainly gram-negative microorganisms (76.6%), especially Klebsiella and Pseudomonas.
The number of white blood cells, T and B lymphocytes, monocytes and the enzyme activity of monocytes and leukocytes were decreased with comparison tohealthy control. Further more, no difference in number of these cells between infection-group and non-infection-group was observed.
It seems likely from these data that even patients with lung cancer without respiratory infection have generally a tendency to be complicated by respiratory infection.

Four groups of Syrian Golden hamsters were treated as follows: Group I was exposed to cigarette smoke (Hamburg type II machine) after intralaryngeal initia tion of total 240μg 7, 12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA); Group II was treated as vehicle alone controls followed by smoke exposure: Group III was exposed to cigarette smoke without the initial dose of initiation. Group IV received DMBA and sham moked.
The animals received a combination of DMBA and smoke exposure developed after 52 weeks various neoplastic changes including 4 epidermoid carcinomas in a significantly higher incidence and earlier than other control groups. These findings lead to the conclusion that promoting agents or cocarcinogens have an important function in cigarette smoke carcinogenesis in major respiratory tract.

We have made the classification of the bronchoscopic findings of the early lung cancer, Hilam type, and the findings were also pathologically clarified for the study from objective points of view. The analysis of the findings made it possible to diagnose endoscopically the infiltration of the advanced cancer into the bronchial wall, and it is considered also possible to diagnose the depth of the infiltration.

A 43 Old woman was admitted in Jan., 1962. with one month history of cough and sputum. She had been treated with curative operation and irradiation for cervical cancer in March 1961.
X-ray examination showed a mass at right hiliar region and laboratory deta was almost normal limit except for elevation of E. S. R. (59m/1 hr.).
In March 1962, a r. exploratory thoracotomy was performed. Tumor was found at S10 which infiltrated to upperlobe, hilus and mediastinum, and deemed unresectable.
The histological investigation of the biopsy revealed squamous cell carcinoma.
After the surgery, she was treated by small amounts of anticancer drugs and blood transfusion (900ce).
The chest X-ray filums showed progressive clearing and complete disappearance after 1 year.
Thereafter more than 12 years, she was still alive and healthy.
The only factor which could possibly influenced this result were a large amount of blood transfusion (particulary immunological effect) and noncancerocidal amount of anticancer drugs (4300mg of Endoxan).
