In Japan, several pulp and paper mills have been constructed each mill-wide computer system (total production management system) for recent ten years. But all fibrous materials contain moisture, and it is a delicate problem that the moisture content of paper is changed easily by circumstances. Furthemore, it is difficult to measure accurately moisture content of paper by on-line sensors. This is the reason systemizing of quantitative control is not easy in a pulp and paper industry to compare with the steel industry which has the similar process.
In our system, the production volume of paper is showed in area. The wed length equivalent to the area of paper on each process. Talking about a paper machine, the roll length on the reel part is measured automatically and strictly by counting pulse of the reel drum rotation. Using these reliable data from process and some data input by field operators manually, we can get the operating information and the loss quantity yielded in each process from papermaking to finishing.
The hardware with file servers and inteligent terminals are in a horizontal and distributed structure on a LAN. The phase II has been operated since this spring.

IHI-Voith have developed a newly gap former, Duoformer CFD. This former utilizes a suction forming roll to initiate sheet formation and a blade unit to finalize it. The blade unit has been derived from Duoformer D, a hybrid former that has been adopted for many installations with great success.
Therefore the Duoformer CFD offers a wide range of applications with respect to grade, basis weight and speed. It incorporates the positive attributes of roll and blade formers and consequently combines the requirements for optimum paper properties and ease of operation.
Cleanliness has a major bearing on performance. Special attention has therefore been paid to this aspect. A newly developed wire cleaning unit, the Jet Cleaner, will contribute to achieving this goal. Its clean design ensures high runability and high availability.

Stock preparation technologies have changed significantly since the first and the second oil shocks to improve energy saving. In addition, by the movement in recent years to save natural resoures and to protect from environmental pollution, many new technologies have been developed not only in deinking for recycled paper, but also in stock preparation for paper board.
On the other hand, in the paper manufacturing which is one of the most typical industries in continuous operation, a single error in the technologies can easily lead to a big profit loss, and reflects highly on the cost reduction. Reduction of cost by proceeding what we call “Lost Profit Recovery” is important as well as a long term project for a new technology development.
In this paper, an estimation of the lost profit in the stock preparation field for paper board manufacturing and the desirable countermeasures for the lost profit recovery are reported.

Our Cycle Hit System of Iwakuni Mill started up from Febrary 1993 and Coated paper product waste liquor (Color waste liquor) has been treated succesfully with it.
In this system, primary plus secondary sludges are directed to a slugde conditioning tank, where it is dosed with an inorganic coagulant and mixed to neutralize the surface charge of the sludge particles.
This conditioned sludge is then sent to a pelletizing/thickening tank, where an anionic and an amphoteric polymers are added to pelletize the sludge. Using the same tank, water can be removed with a special built-in device, resuluting in a sludge with an increased concentration of solids.
This report described the summary of operation.

Kanzaki Mill, New Oji Paper Co., Ltd. is located in Amagasaki city which is in the south east of Hyogo prefecture. Amagasaki is adjacent to Osaka city bordered by the Kanzaki river, and is also surrounded by Mt. Ikoma to the east and Mt. Rokko on the north. This town still has a traditional good atomosphere brought up by warm heart and cooperative residents.
Here, in Amagasaki, as same as in other industrial areas in Japan, we have been forced to face some changes of environment such as construction of high storied apartments and a more severe control of pollution by local authorities as the result of environmental pollution suits.
Under these situations, we must positively make efforts to solve the problems in order to meet more severe enviromental standards on air and water pollution, legislated by Amagasaki city and Hyogo prefecture.
Then we commenced studying it, focusing on choice of energy, which would result in a progress of rationalization of production and would meet our future conception of the mill adjacent to urban centers.
We have come to the conclusion that No.4 boiler should be converted from heavy oil type to natural gas type. New boiler has come on stream in July 1991. Therefore, we wish to report our experience of No.4 boiler operation for two years.

Kasugai Mill of New Oji Paper Co., Ltd. installed a softwood digester equipped for Modified ContinuousCooking (MCC) in February, 1989. MCC is relatively new technology.
From mill trials, improvement of viscosity and strength of pulp was confirmed by comparing MCC with conventional cooking. Running an MCC operation, kappa number at the blowline has been reduced from 30 to 24, and from 15 to 11 after oxygen delignification. This contributes to the reduction of both chemical costs for bleaching and chlorinated organic compounds (AOX) in the effluent.
Initial problem of MCC operation was the fluctuation of kappa numbers from the instability of temperature at a lower cooking zone which has upflow of digesting liquor. Kappa number has been stabilized after increasing circulation flows drastically in this area.
The yield of unbleached pulp is decreased with MCC lower kappa number, but it is compensated with oxygen delignification which removes lignin more selectivety. The yield after bleaching is comparable with conventional cooking.

Interfacical properties required for deinking agent were investigated as perceiving agglomeration and capturing of ink particles, followed by penetration of the area where ink is in contact with the fiber and removing ink from the fiber respectively. Interfacical phenomena such as contact angle, zeta-potential and retreat contact angle were measured. Excellent deinking is achieved under controlled properties of the surface chemistry. Moreover, the influence of deinking agents on optical factors: brightness and color shade, physical properties of DIP and effects to sizing and paper strength for end products at papermaking were studied.

Although for process optimization and to keep a kraft recovery boiler on line it is crucial to avoid pluggage of the air and gas passages, the technology of recovery boiler cleaning had not changed for quite some time. Sootblowers are not efficient and very costly to operate. Most air ports are still being cleaned through manual rodding with all disadvantages for the recovery process.
Recently, the methods of recovery boiler cleaning have been improved quite substantially.
New cleaning concepts have been developed and tested to help improving the overall process efficiency of the recovery boiler. The result of this development is an optimized cleaning system using multilevel automatic port cleaners and dampers for improving control over combustion in the lower furnace and an advanced sootblower system for keeping the upper furnace cleaner.
Several new recovery boilers have been equipped with this technology.

In recent years, the contaminant load in the bleaching process is reduced by installation of oxygen delignification facilities and by the improvement of bleaching sequence. The components in contaminant change, and the molecular weight of the components is becoming lower.
Changes of effluent properties from bleaching process will degrade COD recovery performance in UF membrane facility. In order to improve this COD recovery performance, the experiment of membrane for E/O stage effluent is carried out. In UF membrane process, most part of higher molecular weight components (more than several ten thousand) and about 50% of ten thousand molecular weight components are removed, resulting in 50 to 60% of COD recovery. As for color and AOX, the recovery capacity was more than that for COD.
The processing system, in which UF membrane is combined with RO membrane, is studied to improve COD recovery capability. In this system, permeate from UF membrane is processed by RO membrane and it is found that COD recovery capability improved from 53.5% to 67.0%.
It is also confirmed that the recovery capability for both color and AOX can be improved.

This thesis will take up a Yankee hood for drying tissue or toilet paper which is widely used at home and describe its outline in view of increased dehydration capacity, improved moisture profile uniformity, and decreased energy comsumption.
Characteristics of Latest Yankee Hoods
Dehydration Capacity of Yankee Hood
Recently the Yankee hood has been required to have a share of 50 to 60% of the total dehydration capacity of the entire system. This has increased demand for high temperature, high velocity hoods to enhance the dehydration capacity. Specifically, the hot air temperature has increased from 300°C to 450°C, and the air velocity, from 90m/sec. to 120m/sec.
Moisture Profile Correction in Yankee Hood
Hot air nozzles are divided into seven to twelve groups across the paper width. The velocityof hot air from each group is adjusted to correct the moisture profile.
Energy Saving at Yankee Hood
Improvement in dehydration efficiency ·The gap between the Yankee dryer surface and the hot air nozzles should be minimized.·The hot air temperature should be kept at the necessary minimum.
Improvement in thermal efficiency·The volume of air for exhausting moisture should be kept at minimum. The dew point of the exhaust is 79-82°C.·The supply air of the volume corresponding to the exhaust air volume should be preheated by waste heat recovery.·Pressure balance inside the hood should be controlled.
Improvement in motor transmission efficiency

As a model of reactive sizing agent the sizing efficiency of various phenol stearates in neutral paper making were evaluated and was found to be closely related to the stability of phenol stearate.
As a “non-reactive” sizing agent alpha-hydroxy-carboxylic acids (α-hydroxystearic acid) had remarkable sizing efficiency when used along with alum. This finding has led to the development of a new neutral sizing agent KS-951 effective in a wide pH range of paper making which, unlike AKD, dose not require curing for the development of sizing effect.

Henkel Corporation reported that typical commercially available polyaminoamide-epichlorohydrin (PAE) resins contained about 12% of low molecular weight organic chloride contaminants (1). The performance of the first generation products of low TOCL PAE resins were slightly inferior to the typical PAE resins. Henkel Corporation developed new PAE resin which has low level of TOCL content and even better performance. This product, Fibrabon 1, 500 HP has higher content of quaternary ammonium salt groups which affect the performance of PAE resin.

The structures of the coated layers containing amphoteric latices as binders, with different glass-transition temperatures (Tg), have been studied with respect to the porosity, the of latex particles and the degree of orientation of clay particles in the coated layers.
In contrast with the conventional anionic latices, amphoteric latices are found to form more porous coated layer, disturb the orientation of clay particles and show restricted migrations in the coated layers, through the electrostatic interaction with clay particles when the coating colors are prepared below pH 10.
These behaviors are also revealed to depend on the Tg of latices and the drying conditions of coated layers
The structural features of coated layers are discussed in connection with the properties of coated paper, e. g. gloss.

Small particle size of latex for a coating color formulation was effective to reduce the color viscosity at high shear rate, so that their coating color was suitable for high speed coating.
Small particle size latex exhibited good picking strength and ink holdout. But it gave poor sheet gloss and ink receptivity.
It was possible to combine advantageous coating materials. For example, it was improved and valanced that a small particle size of clay was used for a coating formulation in addition to small particle size of latex.
It could be suitable for high speed coating over 1, 500 m/min. and gave good coated paper properties.
