    The outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in China are ongoing, and the inadequate management of the pig supply chain is criticized. In the past four years, a series of preventive and control measures have been supplied national wide, while the outbreaks have not been terminated. This suggests the existing animal disease management at the district level may not be appropriate to control ASF under the current situation of the ASF outbreak in China. It is urgent to further describe real distribution areas of ASF in China. In this study, we combined four regional-scale models to predict the risk distribution of ASF in mainland China and identify risk factors related to ASF outbreaks. The results showed that the four regional-scale models were more accurate in predicting the ASF outbreaks than the nationwide scale model. The four regional-scale models identified the potential risk factors associated with ASF outbreaks, such as population density, pig density, land cover, temperature, and elevation factors. Moreover, seven clusters with high potential risk of ASF outbreaks were identified. Then, based on the results, we proposed more suitable prevention and control plans for ASF, which can assist the implementation of transport management policies within and between risk clusters.

    Rabbit oncology is gaining more attention as more pet rabbits are surviving beyond their normal lifespans. Due to the limited epidemiological information on pet rabbits’ tumors in Thailand, this study aimed to report the prevalence and the potential risk factors associated with tumors in pet rabbits in Thailand. From 2018 to 2022, 93 tissue biopsies from tumor-suspected lesions on pet rabbits were gathered from animal hospitals in Bangkok and Chonburi provinces, Thailand. According to histopathology confirmation, tumors and tumor-like lesions were diagnosed. In this study, the overall tumors were 67.74% (n=63) out of the submitted cases (n=93). The most commonly affected organ systems were reproduction (65.08%) and integumentary (22.22%). Rabbits older than 5 years were 3.85 times more likely to have reproductive tumors than younger rabbits (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.45–10.27, P≤0.01), and the most frequently occurring tumor type was uterine adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, male rabbits had a 17.02 times higher probability of developing cutaneous tumors than female rabbits (95% CI: 4.19–69.11, P≤0.001), and the most frequently occurring tumor type was soft tissue sarcoma. The results of this study thus suggested that the age and sex of the rabbits were potential risk factors for tumor development in Thailand. The knowledge gained from our study also provided the recommendation for owners to monitor their rabbits’ health annually, particularly after late middle age, and rendered guidance for tumor detection in practical clinics.

    Helicobacter pylori is a well-known pathogen that causes chronic gastritis, leading to the development of gastric cancer. This bacterium has also been detected in dogs, and symptoms similar to those in humans have been reported. The cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) is involved in pathogenesis through aberrant activation of host signal transduction, including the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. We have previously shown the anti-inflammatory effect of the G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) via inhibiting of NF-κB activation in several cells. Therefore, here, we investigated the effect of GPER on CagA-mediated NF-κB promoter activity and showed that CagA overexpression in gastric cancer cells activated the NF-κB reporter and induced interleukin 8 (il-8) expression, both of which were inhibited by the GPER agonist.

    Thalidomide, an angiogenesis inhibitor, has recently been used to treat malignant canine tumors. This study retrospectively investigated the adverse events (AEs) of thalidomide administered to tumor-bearing dogs. We investigated the pharmacokinetics of thalidomide after administration and the rate of body weight change before and after administration. The initial thalidomide dose was 5 mg/kg per os once daily, which was increased to 10 mg/kg once daily in dogs with no significant AEs. Pharmacokinetics were measured in four dogs after the 5 mg/kg or 10 mg/kg dose. We evaluated AEs related to clinical signs in 51 patients; 9/51 had lethargy, 6/51 had tremor, 4/51 had dizziness, 31/51 had decreased appetite, 8/51 had vomiting, and 16/49 had soft stool/diarrhea. We evaluated hematologic toxicity in 44 patients with grade 3 or higher adverse events; 1/44 had thrombocytopenia, 1/44 had increased blood urea nitrogen concentrations, and 5/44 had increased alanine aminotransferase activities. The mean thalidomide blood levels were Cmax=1.4 ± 0.7 μg/mL (Area under the curve [AUC]0–24=8.5 ± 4.7 μg•hr /mL) and Cmax=3.2 ± 2.1 μg/mL (AUC0–24=22.0 ± 14.7 μg•hr/mL) in the 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg groups, respectively. The Cmax and AUC in the 10 mg/kg group were comparable to the effective blood concentrations seen in humans administered thalidomide. The weight fluctuation rates were assessed in 24 dogs approximately 1 month after the start of thalidomide administration; more than half showed weight maintenance or gain. Most AEs were clinically acceptable; however, peripheral nerve signs were seen in some dogs.

    Gallbladder mucocele (GBM) is one of the most common gallbladder diseases in dogs. Its pathogenesis has not yet been clarified, but excessive accumulation of a secretory gel–forming mucin, MUC5AC in the gallbladder has been reported. This study aimed to ascertain if MUC5AC overproduction resulted in mucus accumulation in the gallbladder during GBM development. Eleven dogs undergoing cholecystectomy who were pathologically diagnosed with GBM were included, and the expression level of mucins, particularly MUC5AC and MUC5B, in their gallbladder epithelial cells was compared with those in normal gallbladder epithelial cells. On reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction screening, there was a significant difference (P<0.05) in the mRNA expression level of MUC1, but not of other mucins including MUC5AC and MUC5B, between mucocele and normal gallbladder epithelial cells. Protein expression levels were also evaluated for MUC5AC and MUC5B using immunohistochemistry. There was little immunoreactivity for MUC5AC, whereas MUC5B showed definitive staining in gallbladder epithelial cells. There was no difference in MUC5AC and MUC5B protein expression levels between mucocele and normal gallbladder epithelial cells. These data suggest that excessive production of mucin, especially MUC5AC and MUC5B, does not occur in canine GBM, and that abnormal mucus excretion, rather than excessive mucus production, may be the cause of GBM development.

    Forty-five foals with Rhodococcus equi infection and pneumonia symptoms were classified into a surviving group and a dead group. Using serum samples, the oxidative stress index (OSI) was determined at the first visit and the follow-up visit. The OSI of the surviving group was significantly lower at the follow-up than that at the first visit. No significant difference was observed between the OSI of the dead group at the first and follow-up visits. In the surviving group, treatment at the first visit mitigated inflammation and reduced OSI. However, in the dead group, poor response to the treatment provided at the first visit led to continued inflammation, and no change was observed the OSI.

    A 28-day-old Holstein calf with astasia (i.e., right hind limb flaccid paralysis) was referred to Large Animal Veterinary Educational Center. Thoracic radiographs showed an alveolar pattern and air bronchograms indicating pneumonia, whereas skeletal radiography showed muscle atrophy of the right hind limb but no abnormalities in the coxofemoral and stifle joints. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed the pulmonary abscess in the right cranial pulmonary lobe and a thrombus (5 × 5 × 20 mm) in the right external iliac artery distal to the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta. These findings were confirmed via pathological examination. Streptococcus bovis/equinus complex colonies were isolated from the thrombus and pulmonary abscess. Thus, the pulmonary abscess was considered the infectious source of the thromboembolism in the right external iliac artery. Arterial thromboembolism should be included in the differential diagnoses in calves with astasia but without radiographic skeletal abnormalities.

    This report describes for the first time, the antemortem diagnosis of hydatidosis in dromedary camel based on the WHO informal working groups on echinococcosis guidelines of echinococcosis classification. The case was admitted at the University Veterinary Hospital, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia, with a history of progressive weight loss and decreased appetite for the past 4 months. Alterations in hematobiochemical parameters included leukopenia, neutropenia, decreased hematocrit percent, red blood cells count and hemoglobin concentration, hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperglobulinemia, hyperglycemia and azotemia. Ultrasonographically, multiple cysts were imaged within the hepatic tissue containing anechoic fluid and fibrin tags. Ultrasound-guided aspiration of a cyst revealed a clear non-turbid fluid. Ultrasonographic diagnostic is recommended for the work-up of cystic lesions of camel liver suspected to be due to Echinococcus granulosus.

    A 23-month-old Holstein-Friesian heifer presented with inactivity and diarrhea. On physical examination, no enlargement of superficial lymph nodes was observed. Hematological examination revealed lymphocytosis. The bovine leukemia virus (BLV) proviral load was 2,122 copies/10 ng DNA, and BLV was classified as Group C based on whole genome phylogenetic analysis. Monoclonal proliferation of B-cells and monoclonal integration of the BLV provirus in the bovine genome were detected by a clonality test of B-cells and inverse PCR, respectively. Although lymph nodes were not swollen at necropsy, histopathological examination revealed neoplastic lymphocyte proliferation in lymph nodes, which were immune positive for CD5 and CD20, and negative for CD3. The heifer was diagnosed with EBL caused by BLV classified as Group C.

    The brain of a rhesus monkey that died at 43 years of age with symptoms of suspected cognitive dysfunction was analyzed. pathological analyses revealed characteristic Alzheimer’s disease-related lesions: the aggregation of amyloid β (Aβ) in the form of senile plaques and phosphorylated tau proteins. We also revealed that Aβ43, which is prone to aggregation and toxicity in humans, is involved in senile plaques in the brain of the rhesus monkey, as well as several other Aβ species. Comparative studies of neuropathology using aged nonhuman primates lack behavioral descriptions compared to human medicine. This case report showed behavioral abnormalities and the detailed pathological changes that may have caused it in a super-aged rhesus monkey.

    A 12-year-old spayed female American short-haired cat presented with a palatal gingival mass located between the right maxillary third incisor and the canine teeth. The mass was dark red and had a narrow attachment to the gingival margin of the canine tooth. The mass was completely removed by marginal excision and the histopathological diagnosis was a capillary hemangioma. The mass did not relapse until 1 year later; however, the tooth was extracted because of cervical resorption of the right maxillary canine immediately adjacent to the mass resection site. This report presents a rare case of the gingival hemangioma in a cat and the possibility of a causal relationship between the occurrence of external cervical tooth resorption and hemangioma resection.

    Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) is a nonselective cation channel that is activated by a variety of stimuli and acts as a nociceptor. Mouse and human TRPA1 exhibit different reactivity to some stimuli, including chemicals such as menthol as well as cold stimuli. The cold sensitivity of TRPA1 in mammalian species is controversial. Here, we analyzed the reactivity of heterologously expressed canine TRPA1 as well as the mouse and human orthologs to menthol or cold stimulation in Ca2+-imaging experiments. Canine and human TRPA1 exhibited a similar response to menthol, that is, activation in a concentration-dependent manner, even at the high concentration range in contrast to the mouse ortholog, which did not respond to high concentration of menthol. In addition, the response during the removal of menthol was different; mouse TRPA1-expressing cells exhibited a typical response with a rapid and clear increase in [Ca2+]i (“off-response”), whereas [Ca2+]i in human TRPA1-expressing cells was dramatically decreased by the washout of menthol and [Ca2+]i in canine TRPA1-expressing cells was slightly decreased. Finally, canine TRPA1 as well as mouse and human TRPA1 were activated by cold stimulation (below 19–20°C). The sensitivity to cold stimulation differed between these species, that is, human TRPA1 activated at higher temperatures compared with the canine and mouse orthologs. All of the above responses were suppressed by the selective TRPA1 inhibitor HC-030031. Because the concentration-dependency and “off-response” of menthol as well as the cold sensitivity were not uniform among these species, studies of canine TRPA1 might be useful for understanding the species-specific functional properties of mammalian TRPA1.

    Eukaryotic elongation factor 2 (eEF2) kinase (eEF2K) is a protein kinase that inactivates eEF2, a protein that mediates a peptidyl-tRNA translocation during an elongation step of protein synthesis. We have previously shown that eEF2K was involved in pathogenesis of essential and pulmonary hypertension. A484954 (7-amino-1-cyclopropyl-3-ethyl-2,4-dioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrido[2,3-d] pyrimidine-6-carboxamide), a selective eEF2K inhibitor, is a membrane permeable small molecule. We have previously shown that A484954 lowered blood pressure and induced diuretic effects in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) due to an increase in renal blood flow. Here we aimed to reveal mechanisms underlying the diuretic effects of A484954 in SHR. A484954-induced diuresis and increase in urinary Na+ excretion were inhibited by N (G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), a nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor. A484954 increased mRNA expression of angiotensin type 2 receptor (AT2R) and nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). In summary, we for the first time revealed that A484954 induces diuresis in SHR at least partly via the activation of NO/Nrf2/AT2R pathway.

    Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) is a multifunctional cytokine that controls various cellular processes. Protein phosphatase 6 (PP6) is an evolutionarily conserved serine/threonine protein phosphatase with diverse functions in cell signaling. However, it has not been linked to TGF-β signaling. We found that TGF-β treatment increased PP6 protein levels via transcriptional and post-translational regulation. Loss of the Ppp6c gene suppressed TGF-β-induced canonical Smad3 phosphorylation and its transcriptional activity. PP6 knockout also inhibited non-canonical p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Moreover, PP6 depletion suppressed cell migration induced by TGF-β. These findings uncovered the role of PP6 as a positive regulator for TGF-β signaling.

    The composition of the gut microbiome varies due to dietary habits. We investigated influences of diet on the composition of the gut microbiome using the feces of 11 avian species, which consumed grain-, fish- and meat-based diets. We analyzed gut microbiome diversity and composition by next-generation sequencing (NGS) of 16S ribosomal RNA. The grain-diet group had higher gut microbiome diversity than the meat- and fish-diet group. The ratio of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes phyla was higher in the grain-diet group than in the meat- and fish-diet groups. The grain-diet group had a higher ratio of Veillonellaceae than the meat-diet group and a higher ratio of Eubacteriaceae than the fish-diet habit group. To clarify the influence of diet within the same species, white-tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla, n=6) were divided into two groups, and given only deer meat or fish for approximately one month. The composition of the gut microbiome of individuals in both groups were analyzed by NGS. There were indications of fluctuation in the levels of some bacteria (Lactobacillus, Coriobacteriales, etc.) in each diet group. Moreover, one individual for each group which switched each diet in last week changed to each feature of composition of bacterial flora. The above results show that the composition of the gut microbiome differ depending on diet, even within the same species.

    Sathuperi virus (SATV) and Shamonda virus (SHAV) (family Peribunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus, species Schmallenberg orthobunyavirus) have been suggested to cause congenital abnormalities in ruminants. In this study, we determined the complete genome sequences of SATV KSB-6/C/02 and SHAV KSB-2/C/08 strains, which were obtained from Culicoides biting midges in Japan, by next-generation sequencing and Sanger sequencing. The 3ʹ- and 5ʹ-untranslated region sequences of the M segment of SHAV KSB-2/C/08 strains are distinctly different from those of SATV KSB-6/C/02 and Schmallenberg viruses. This study provides the genome characterization of Japanese strains of SATV and SHAV and presented the genetic variation in the untranslated regions of Schmallenberg orthobunyavirus M segments.

    For the preservation of Misaki horses, changes in the population structure and genetic diversity of the horses for 5 years were analyzed using population and genotype data from 2015–2020. The microsatellite genotyping was performed, and the average number of alleles (Na), expected heterozygosity (He), and observed value (Ho) were calculated. Moreover, the average generation length (GL) was estimated from the population management record. Then, no significant differences in Na, He, and Ho were found between 2015 and 2020, suggesting their genetic diversity had been maintained for 5 years. Moreover, the average GL was estimated as 4.6 years. Compared to other native horses, a short average GL suggesting a rapid generation renewing is a characteristic of the Misaki population.
