This paper proposes the concept of “domain focus” and analyzes the television industry by focusing on device transactions in the consumer electronics field. Japanese manufacturers were once competitive worldwide in CRT-based television sets. Furthermore, they retained their competitive edge following the development of thin screen televisions. In spite of such outstanding performance in the past, Japan is no longer the lead competitor within the television industry. Using the concept of domain focus, competition within this complex field, including technological changes and the impact of globalization on the entire economy, can be concisely organized.
