Although Japanese business management is still unfamiliar with the term acculturation, research into acculturation regarding corporate mergers and acquisitions (M&A) has been conducted in Europe and the United States since 1980. This paper reviews representative results from European and American researchers discussing the successes and failures of M&A from the perspective of acculturation. It also highlights issues with the acculturation model pointed out in some of the most prominent studies, namely J.W. Berry (1983, 1984) and A. Nahvandi and A.R. Malekzadeh (1988).
