1) Prior infection of mice with the low-virulence Beverley strain of Toxoplasma, after a period of 3 weks or more, protected mice against an otherwise lethal challenge with the highly virulent RH strain.
2) The "immune" mice exhibited only a slight and transient loss of weight following exposure to RH, and after a week's time, commonly developed ascites, but otherwise remained in good condition. In contrast, the nonimmune mice suffered a sharp and sustained loss of weight, symptoms of severe disease, and death within 5 days.
3) Chronically infected mice (Beverley for more than 5 months) on occasion reacted violently to challenge with RH, with the rapidity and nature of the reaction suggesting hypersensitivity.
4) Briefly discussed are the participation of humoral factors in the acquired immunity, and the persistence of RH trophozoites in the peritoneal exudate of immune mice.
