    The development of lymph follicles of the bursa of Fabricius of chick and quail embryos was studied by light and electron microscopes. The epithelial cells of the inner (or medullary) zone were transformed both into reticular and lymphocytic series. There was a stage where a close contact between epithelial and mesenchymal cells through the disruption of the epithelial basement mem-brane of the primordial lymph follicle (bud). It was most plausible that cells of lymphocytic series not only in the outer but also in the inner zone are of dual origin: epithelial and mesenchymal. The inner (or medullary) zone of the bursal follicle consisted of epithelial cell reticulum and lymphocytic series without the contribution of mesenchymay cells and blood vessels. The outer (or cortical) zone consisted of mesenchymal cell reticulum and lymphocytic series with the partial contribution of epithelial cells and blood vessels. Lymphocytic cells of the bursa showed several developmental stages from blastic types to medium-sized lymphocytes. But they tended to have larger cytoplasmic diameters with stronger basophilia and more abundant free ribosomes in their cytoplasm than those of the thymus.

    Cholesterol absorption was studied from the aspect of the obligatory func-tion of bile in the rat.
    Bile fistula rats were fed various bile salts with 0.2 μc of cholesterol-4-14C, 50mg of nonradioactive cholesterol and 0.33ml of oleic acid mixed with a fat and sterol free synthetic basal diet. The following recoveries of radioactivity in the bile were obtained: Na-cholate, 21%; Na-taurocholate, 45%; Na-glyco-cholate, 41%; Na-deoxycholate, 3.5%; and, no more than a trace with lithocholate, chenodeoxycholate, hyodeoxycholate, hyocholate, apocholate, dehydrocholate, and 3α, 12α-dihydroxy-7-keto-cholanate. When taurocholate was fed with dehydrocho-late, a 48% recovery was obtained. When the oleic acid was omitted, the per-centage recovery was reduced to 6% with Na-cholate and 17% with Na-taurocholate.
    The absorbability of squalene was compared with that of cholesterol in the intact rat by using the balance method. Forty-four per cent of 61.5mg of squalene and 58% of 50mg of cholesterol were absorbed or not recovered in the feces. The simultaneous feeding of squalene and cholesterol resulted in ap-proximately the same amount, namely, 42% and 54% absorption of squalene and cholesterol, respectively.
    In bile fistula rats, only 5.6% of squalene was unrecovered in the feces, while feeding Na-taurocholate with squalene raised this figure to 25% when for cholesterol it was 35%.
    Practically no squalane was absorbed by the intestine of intact rats.
    It is concluded that cholesterol absorption requires bile acid salts which posses 7α and 12α hydroxyl groups simultaneously in addition to the 3α hydroxyl group in the bile acid molecule.
    The requirement of specific bile salts in the absorption of cholesterol may involve the interaction between the bile salt and the cellular substances.
    The mechanism for the absorption of cholesterol is tentatively described as a diffusion through a lipoid sieve mediated specifically by cholate or its con-jugates.

    1) Urease solution shows a characteristic absorption in ultraviolet with a maximum at 278 mμ at pH from 6.0 to 8.0.
    2) The equation, 0 D at 278 mμ×F=Urease (mg/ml), F=1.25 was obtained when urease solution was completely free from acetone.

    In order to elucidate the pathophysiology of iron deficiency anemia during adolescence, interrelationship among vitamin E, ovarian function and unpalpable splenomegaly was studied in this anemia and following results were obtained.
    1. The serum vitamin E level of patients with iron deficiency anemia in adolescence before treatment was 0.87±0.17mg per 100ml showing a remarkably low level as compared to 1.25±0.12mg per 100ml in healthy adults.
    Dialuric acid hemolysis test in patients with iron deficiency anemia during adolescence before treatment was positive in 43.1%. No positive dialuric acid hemolysis test was observed in any of the healthy adults.
    Following iron therapy, increase of serum vitamin E level, decreased in-cidence of positive dialuric acid hemolysis test were observed accompanied with recovery from anemia.
    2. In pretreatment stage of this anemia decreased urinary excretion of estrogen and pregnanediol with abnormal pattern of basal body temperature indicating ovarian dysfunction were observed. However, this ovarian dysfunc-tion extremely improved with recovery from anemia following iron therapy.
    3. In 65.6% of patients with iron deficiency anemia in adolescence un-palpable splenomegaly was observed by tomographic examination before treat-ment. However, reduction of splenic size was observed in 52.8% of the cases with recovery from anemia following iron therapy.
    The role of vitamin E in connection with ovarian dysfunction and unpalp-able splenomegaly in iron deficiency anemia during adolescence was discussed.

    The investigations were made to clarify the role of vitamin E in iron defici-ency anemia and the following results were obtained:
    1. Seventy-eight cases with ircn deficiency anemia showed lower level of serum vitamin E (0.88±0.16mg per 100ml) than 100 healthy adults (1.25±0.12mg per 100ml).
    2. In those cases who showed excellent recovery from anemia following iron therapy, significant increase of serum vitamin E level was observed, and in the relapsing cases the serum vitamin E level was depressed again in the relapsed stage. The cases with insufficient recovery from anemia following iron therapy were found to have lesser increase of serum vitamin E.
    3. Combination therapy with iron and vitamin E was proved to decrease the incidence of relapse in iron deficiency anemia and to bring better prognosis in iron deficiency anemia with insufficient recovery following iron therapy alone. Namely, relapse occurred in 26.6% of patients treated with combination therapy in comparison with relapse 53.3% of patients treated with iron therapy alone. In fifty percent of the cases with insufficient recovery from anemia, further in-crease of hemoglobin level was observed following comb nation therapy.
    Role of vitamin E in clarifyinn the pathophysiology and treatment of iron deficiency anemia was discussed.
