    Upon cultivation of various human ovarian cancer, a successful establish ment was made on a long term continuous culture of the papillary serous cystadenocarcinoma. This new cell line was named human ovarian cancer twenty-one (HOC-21).
    The material obtained from an ovarian cancer on the left side of a 56 year-old woman, was placed into culture on September 22, 1971. A favorable growth has been recognized from the time of culture till now, for a period of 2 years and 4 months, and presents no signs of declining. Doubling time was 28 hours at the 26th generation.
    The cultured cells were commonly polygonal and epithelial in shape and the nuclei revealed pleomorphism and proved clearly to be atypical under exfoliative cytology. A jigsaw puzzle like cellular arrangement, wheeled pat tern and piling-up tendency in the growing process were characteristics of the cells. And sometimes a vesicle formation was shown.
    The PAS staining in the cultured cell was negative; alkaline phosphatase was negative and acid phosphatase positive.
    Chromosomes, manifesting near-diploid, possessed a large telocentric marker chromosome.
    When HOC-21 was transplanted into a hamster cheek pouch, it demon strated a definite tumor formation whose histologic picture revealed papillary adenocarcinoma. The original characteristics of ovarian adenocarcinoma have been precisely maintained in vitro culture system.

    Orbital blowout fracture in facial fractures is the most difficult to handle and mechanism of the fracture is unknown. Only one experimental proof is made by Smith, who insists of the theory of increased hydraulic pressure in the orbital contents as a causative factor. Our clinical cases do not always present such an evidence. In order to clarify the mechanism, the serial tests were designed. The first test is stress coat test, which suggests that stress concentration is quantitatively focused along the suture lines of the orbital walls and the infraorbital canal. The phenomenon is notch effect.

    This work was designed to investigate the fine structures of the rat and the rabbit blastocysts with both transmission and scanning electron microscopes.
    The cells of the trophoblast form a single layer beneath the intact zona pellucida and the inner cell mass and blastocystic cavity are formed. In the blastocyst on day 5 to 6 of pregnancy, the trophoblast cells were differentiated from the inner cell mass cells. However, the difference in density was not distinct and the distribution and structures of the organelles were almost similar in both cells.
    The tight junctional complex between the trophoblast cells and the loose association among the inner cell mass cells were observed. The organelles of the blastocysts were quite specific. In the rabbit blastocyst, as inclusions restricted to the blastocyst stage, crystal-like inclusions were present.
    From the standpoint of functional aspects the incorporation of 3H-uridine and 3H-thymidine into rat blastocysts was studied using electron microscopical radioautography. The result showed that incorporated 3H-uridine was found in all regions and 3H-thymidine mostly in nucleus. Moreover, with scanning electron microscope the surface of blastocyst was observed after the zona pellucida was removed with pronase. The surface of zona-free rat blastocyst was wholly covered with dense, fine microvilli and abembryonic proliferation was seen. Each bulging trophoblast cell was bounded by grooves and distinguishable to one another.
  • A CASE STUDY WHICH REPORTS CONSIDERABLE VARIATIOP IN SENSITIVITY BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND TREATMENTS

    One patient showed a remarkable change in her sensitivity during separate stages of the human menopausal gonadotropin treatment. The clinical, physical, and hormonal examinations showed low pituitary-gonadal function in this patient. A great amount of human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG 2700 IU) was needed to induce ovulation for the first time. However, in the second treatment, the patient was overstimulated with less than half the amount of HMG used in the first course. A change in ovarian sensitivity to gonadotropin by the previous treatment was suspected for this explanation. In those patients with low pituitary function for a long time, the ovaries may be in a dormant condition. It is supposed that the gonadotropin which was used in the first cycle stimulated the other follicles and prepared them for the next ovulation. The first treatment might have carried its effects to the next one. Autoradiographic methods using the follicles of the mouse ovary showed that follicles of different sizes grow at different rates .6 These facts are also proved hormonally in humans .8 The change in sensitivity after inducing ovulation with HMG may coordinate with these changing follicular growth rates and may suggest real change in ovarian function after the treatment. Better results in the second treatment than the first treatment were also suggesed statistically and in the treatment of hypophysectomized women.910
