    A series of analytical studies on heavy metal distributions in the foods, feces and urinary samples had been presented in this Journal. In the present paper, further statistical analyses on the interrelationship of each heavy metal were done with special reference to the heavy metal ratios and corre-lation coefficient matrices of these metals. Positive correlation coefficients between Cd and Cu in the fecal and urinary samples, which were observed among the inhabitants of Cd-polluted area, dissapeared among the inhabitants of the control area. This indicated the possible depression of Cu intake due to the higher dietary intake of Cd. At these levels of Pb intake observed in the both polluted and control area inhabitants, correlation coefficients of Pb to the other three metals among the former group showed similar values to those of the latter group. The ratios of all pairs of heavy metals in feces were similar to those ratios in rice and the other food samples, but different from those of the urinary metals. This suggests the different metabolism in human organs results the different excretion in the urine and in the feces.

    In order to cover the raw mucosal surface on the nasal side just posterior to the hard palate in conventional pushback surgery, a new microsurgical approach is presented. Two denervated musculomucosal flaps, one each from the cleft margins of the soft cleft palate, are rotated into the opposite side of the raw surface on the nasal side and sutured under an operating micro-scope (magnification 6 ×). The flaps prevent scar contracture and retrogres-sion of the repositioned levator muscle sling and contribute to better early velopharyngeal function attested by an early postoperative articulation study in 10 cases. These tissues are usually discarded during conventional pushback surgery. Therefore, our method is not expected to have any detrimental effects on the palate in addition to the conventional surgery itself.

    Three cases of postoperative lumbar spinal canal stenosis due to anterior spinal fusion were reported. In these cases stenosis occurred at the adjacent intervertebral disc level of the fused segment a considerable time after anterior spinal fusion performed for spondylolisthesis.
    At the stenotic level of the lumbar spinal canal, hypertrophy of the lamina, body spur formation in the articular process, hypertrophy and calci-fication of the yellow ligament and narrowing of the lateral recess were noted.
    These changes are believed to have been caused by excessive stress on the adjacent intervertebral disc, as is the case with stenosis occurring after posterior spinal fusion.

    Growth kinetic curves of various human genitourinary cancer cell lines following treatment with an anticancer drug were determined to find a reliable index of cell damage. They showed a triphasic growth pattern consisting of growth inhibition phase, exponential growth phase (regrowth phase) and stationary phase. The percent survival at the turning point from growth inhibition phase to regrowth phase was considered to be a reliable cell damage index indicating to what extent the proliferative capacity of a cell population was impaired by treatment with the drug.
    Dose-response curves determined by this assay procedure of cell damage (regrowth assay method) clarified the cell reduction kinetics of cis-plati-num (II) diammine dichloride and bleomycin that would provide a rational basis for the mode of their administration in clinical use. They also disclosed the differential drug sensitivities among the cell lines derived from cancers of the different organs represented by HeLa S3, KU 1 and KU 2 and among those from cancers of the same histological type represented by KU 2, NRC 12 and OUR 10 from renal cell carcinoma and KU 1, MGH-U1 and T 24 from transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. These results suggested that, as the increasing number of human cancer cell lines is established, correlation be-tween drug sensitivity and morphological and functional properties of cancer can be investigated in vitro and the results might provide a rational basis for drug selection.
    It was concluded that the regrowth assay method to determine drug-induced cell damage in vitro not only has a wide applicability but also is reli-able enough to clarify the cell reduction kinetics of anticancer drugs and the differential drug sensitivities among various genitourinary cancer cell lines.
