    The purpose of this study was to elucidate the effects of whole-body vibration training (WBVT) on knee function and physical performance in middle-aged and older Japanese women who suffered from knee osteoarthritis (OA) and knee pain. Thirty-eight middle-aged and older Japanese women (aged 50-73 years) with knee OA and knee pain were divided into two groups: (1) a WBVT group (n = 29) engaging in WBVT 3 times a week for 8 weeks, and (2) a control group (C group, n = 9) performing exercises at home. The WBVT program consisted of a warm-up, strength training mainly of the quadriceps and their surrounding muscles and cool-down exercises. In the WBVT group, there were no dropouts, and there were significant improvements in the physical function (Cohen’s d = 0.28) and total score (Cohen’s d = 0.25) of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). There were also statistically significant improvements in all lower-extremity function tests (5-times sit-to-stand, timed up and go, standing time from a long sitting position, sit and reach, 4-way choice reaction time; Cohen’s d = 0.34-1.24). The item that changed significantly in the C group, however, was only the sit and reach (Cohen’s d = 0.52). In addition, all items in the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Score (JOA score) improved significantly (Cohen’s d = 0.63-0.67) in the WBVT group. In conclusion, the 8-week WBVT program can safely improve knee function and physical performance in middle-aged and older Japanese women who suffer from knee OA and knee pain.

    Coffee administration has been shown to increase maximum voluntary contraction and muscular endurance. However, no study has addressed the association between daily consumption of coffee with muscular function. This cross sectional study aimed to investigate the association between frequency of coffee consumption (CC) in daily life and muscle strength among a population of working adult men. This cross sectional study included men (n = 516, mean age: 47.1) who participated in an annual health examination conducted in Sendai. The monthly frequency of coffee consumed was reported by a brief-type self-administered dietary history questionnaire. Leg extension power (LEP) was measured as an index of muscle strength. Subjects were divided into tertile levels according to CC. Analysis of covariance was used to examine the relation between the tertile levels of CC and LEP. After adjustment for potential confounders (including all lifestyle factors), the adjusted means (95% confidence interval) of LEP across the tertiles of CC were 17.4 (16.6 - 18.1) for the lowest tertile, 17.9 (17.4 - 18.5) for the mid tertile, and 18.9 (18.3 - 19.5) for the highest tertile (p for trend = 0.007). Higher frequency of monthly coffee consumption was associated with higher muscle strength.

    The purpose of this study was to retrospectively examine the association of habitual exercise with “single fall (= 1)”, “multiple falls (≥ 2)”, and “injurious falls (≥ 1)” among community-dwelling older adults. A total of 1,683 community-dwelling older adults, aged 60-97 years (72.6 +/- 6.6 yr, 512 men and 1,171 women) were included in this study. Habitual exercises continued one year or longer (6.4 +/- 9.5 yr) were classified into twelve types. Exercise components (time, quantity, period of continuity, and number of exercises) were divided with median or tertiles. To assess the association between habitual exercises and fall status, multivariable logistic regression analyses with stepwise selection method, were applied. The multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that dance (odds ratio (OR): 0.30, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.09-0.96) was negatively associated with “single fall”. Bicycling (OR: 3.72, 95% CI: 1.32-10.77) was positively associated with “multiple falls”, and the period of continuity (OR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.60-0.91) was negatively associated with “multiple falls”. None of the exercise components were selected with regard to “injurious falls”. Results indicate that dance may be an effective type of exercise for fall prevention among community-dwelling older adults. However, caution about falling is warranted toward bicycling as an exercise. Moreover, a longer period of continuity (≥ 4 years) appears to be a positive factor of habitual exercise for fall prevention.

    Recent studies indicate that exercise with a low muscle glycogen state enhances exercise-induced metabolic adaptation. However, it is unclear whether metabolic adaptation is involved with muscle glycogen depletion level. In this study, we investigated the effects of prior muscle glycogen depletion level on metabolic response during acute continuous exercise. Seven men completed two experimental trials consisting of two exercise sessions per day. During the first session, participants performed either intermittent exercise (IE) at VO2max (the IE-CE trial) or continuous exercise (CE) at lactate threshold (the CE-CE trial). During the second session, participants performed 60 minutes of CE at lactate threshold. During this second session, fatty acid oxidation (FAO) was calculated. To determine muscle glycogen content and PGC-1α and PDK-4 mRNA abundance, muscle biopsies were taken at rest after the first session and 2 hours after the second session. After the first session, muscle glycogen content was significantly lower in the IE-CE trial (38.1±5.0 mmol/kg w.w.) than in the CE-CE trial (56.7±10.2 mmol/kg w.w.), P<0.05. FAO was higher in the IE-CE trial than the CE-CE trial at baseline and 15 minutes after the second session (both P<0.05). PGC-1α mRNA abundance increased after exercise (IE-CE, 5.9±2.5; CE-CE, 2.6±1.3-fold; P<0.1). PDK-4 mRNA abundance increased significantly after exercise (IE-CE, 22.2±8.8; CE-CE, 31.5±10.6-fold; P<0.05). PGC-1α and PDK-4 mRNA were not significantly different between the trials. In conclusion, continuous exercise with a slightly muscle glycogen-depleted state induced similar level of PGC-1α and PDK-4 mRNA expression, but attenuated FAO, compared to exercise with a moderate muscle glycogen-depleted state.

    Strenuous and consecutive exercise results in fatigue symptoms accompanied decrease in salivary secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) in athletes. On the other hand, it has been reported that plasma taurine concentration was increased after the high intensity exercise. However, change in salivary taurine concentration after strenuous and consecutive exercise is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between fatigue symptoms and changes in salivary taurine concentration in collegiate male soccer players. Thirty seven collegiate male soccer players participated in three consecutive days of match program. To detect of fatigued players, we measured awakening heart rate and body weight. As the results of these two measurements, we divided subjects to two groups (non-fatigue group, n=15; fatigue group, n=22). We also measured salivary sIgA and taurine concentrations before and after program. Before the program, there were no significant differences in any parameters between two groups. Salivary flow rate and sIgA secretion rate were significantly decreased after the program in the fatigue group. Furthermore, salivary taurine concentration was significantly increased after the program in the fatigue group. In the non-fatigue group, there were no significant differences in any parameters during program. Our results indicated that salivary taurine concentration increased after consecutive high-intense exercise in the collegiate male soccer players.

    Moderate to vigorous physical activity is associated with improving insulin resistance in overweight and obese adults. However, effect of light physical activity on insulin resistance remains to be fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of light physical activity on insulin resistance in overweight and obese men. Thirty-seven overweight and obese middle-aged men (28.9 ± 1.8 kg/m2, 51.0 ± 8.8 years) participated in this study. They took part in the lifestyle intervention (calorie restricted diet and exercise) for 12 weeks. Anthropometric parameters, fasting glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR were assessed at baseline and post intervention. Physical activity was objectively measured using a triaxial accelerometer at baseline and during intervention. Light physical activity (+17.7 min/day) and moderate-vigorous physical activity (+33.2 min/day) increased significantly, while body weight (-12.4 kg), fasting glucose (-9.5 mg/ml), fasting insulin (-4.2 μU/ml), and HOMA-IR (-1.1) decreased significantly. The change in light physical activity from baseline to during intervention were inversely related to change in fasting insulin (r = 0.18, P = 0.02) and change in HOMA-IR (r = -0.16, P = 0.03), after adjustment for several confounders. These results suggest that an increase of light physical activity improves insulin resistance in overweight and obese men.
