Photophysical properties of water-soluble porphyrin were studied in aqueous solutions with/without DNA and in DNA solid films. Ultrathin films were prepared from aqueous DNA solutions by a spin-coating method on glass or on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Remarkable enhancement of phosphorescence was observed for porphyrin immobilized in DNA films spin-coated on AuNPs, which was attributed to the electric field enhancement and the increased radiative rate by localized surface plasmon resonance of AuNPs.

Photon upconversion (UC) is a technique to convert long wavelength light into short wavelength light. UC fluorescence by triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) follows a mechanism involving two kinds of molecules as sensitizer and emitter. In this study, we constructed the photon UC dyes system that was applicable to weak excitation light and convert the red light into yellow light in high efficiency. The present result will be useful for the purpose of application to optical elements and light medical care.

Organic photoconductors (OPC) have been an important research and development topics for high quality electrophotography. By using electric field induced optical second harmonic generation (EFISHG) measurement, we can probe carrier processes in electrophotographic processes such as photo carrier generation, carrier separation, and carrier transportation for copier image production. We here selectively probe charge generation and accumulation in charge generation layer and charge transport layer in multilayer structure OPCs. We studied charge accumulation in OPC under illumination (wavelength 635nm) of double-layer-type OPC with structure of hole transport layer coated on charge generation layer. The result showed that light absorption efficiently produces free holes and electrons in the charge generation layer, followed by excessive hole accumulation at the CG/CT interface due to photo-conducting effect of CG layer. The short-wavelength irradiation at 405nm induced photovoltaic effect. These results demonstrated that the EFISHG measurement is useful to selectively probe carrier process in one layer of the multilayer OPC and to the discussion of carrier process for electrophotographic image productions.

Electric field induced optical second harmonic generation (EFISHG) measurement at the laser wavelength of 1000nm and 1080nm is conducted to investigate the carrier behaviors in PCPDTBT and PC71BM bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (OSCs). We find that the response time for electrode charging through the external circuit in +1V and -1V are almost identical but the response time for the Maxwell-Wagner-type interfacial charging is different in +1V or -1V. We find that the accumulated charges of PC71BM is more than the accumulated charges of PCPDTBT and consequently affects the efficiency of the bulk heterojunction OSCs.

In this work, we report the in situ growth of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the improvement of a transmission surface plasmon resonance (T-SPR) sensor to detect human immunoglobulin G (IgG). Human IgG was immobilized on an activated self-assembled monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic on a gold-coated grating substrate. The T-SPR system was also used to monitor the construction of sensor chips as well as the binding of IgG and anti-IgG conjugated with AuNPs. After specific adsorption with IgG, the T-SPR signal was further enhanced by the in situ growth of AuNPs bound with anti-IgG. Using AuNP conjugation and in situ growth of bound AuNPs, the sensitivity of the IgG immunosensor was improved by two orders of magnitude compared with that without conjugated AuNPs.

We describe the preparation of an α-phenyl-4'-(diphenylamino)stilbene (TPA) single crystal and the evaluation of its hole transport property. Based on the characterization using optical microscopy, polarizing microscopy, and X-ray diffraction, a large-scale TPA single crystal of dimensions 7.0×0.9×0.8mm is successfully synthesized using a solution method based on the solubility and supersolubility curves of the TPA. Notably, the current in the long-axis direction is larger than those in the short-axis and thickness directions (i(long) > i(short) > i(thickness)), which reveals the anisotropic charge transfer of the TPA single crystal. The observed anisotropic conductivity is well explained by the orientation of the triphenylamine unit in the TPA single crystal. Furthermore, the activation energy of the long-axis direction in the TPA single crystal is lower than that of the short-axis in TPA and all the axes in the α-phenyl-4'-[bis(4-methylphenyl)amino]stilbene single crystal reported in our previous study.

The AuGe-alloy source and drain (S/D) formed on SiO2/Si(100) by the lithography process was investigated for the scaling of the organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with bottom-contact geometry. The S/D was fabricated by the lift-off process utilizing the resist of OFPR. The OFETs with minimum channel length of 2.4 µm was successfully fabricated by the lift-off process. The fabrication yield of Au S/D was 57%, while it was increased to 93% and 100% in case of the Au-1%Ge and Au-7.4%Ge S/D, respectively. Although the mobility of the OFETs with Au-7.4%Ge S/D was decreased to 1.1×10-3 cm2/(Vs), it was able to be increased to 5.5×10-2 cm2/(Vs) by the surface cleaning utilizing H2SO4/H2O2 mixture solution (SPM) and post metallization annealing (PMA) after lift-off process, which was higher than that of OFET with Au S/D.

Organic electronics devices can be applicable to implant sensors. The noises in the acquired data can be removed by smoothing using sliding windows. We developed a new criterion for window-size decision based on smoothness and similarity (SSC). The smoothed curve fits the raw data well and is sufficiently smooth.

Copper (Cu) electroless plating was conducted on planar and microstructured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. In this study, organic thin films terminated with nitrogen (N)-containing groups, e.g. poly (dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) brush (PDMAEMA), aminopropyl trimethoxysilane monolayer (APTES), and polydopamine (PDA) were used to anchor palladium (Pd) catalyst. While electroless plating was successfully promoted on all sample surfaces, PDMAEMA was found to achieve the best adhesion strength to the PDMS surfaces, compared to APTES- and PDA-covered PDMS substrates, due to covalent bonding, anchoring effects of polymer chains as well as high affinity of N atoms to Pd species. Our process was also successfully applied to the electroless plating of microstructured PDMS substrates.

Improvement of output and lifetime is a problem for biofuel cells. A structure was adopted in which gelation mixed with agarose and fuel (fructose) was sandwiched by electrodes made of graphene-coated carbon fiber. The electrode surface not contacting the gel was exposed to air. In addition, grooves were added to the gel surface to further increase the oxygen supply. The power density of the fuel cell was examined in terms of the electrode area exposed to air. The output increased almost in proportion to the area of the electrode exposed to air. Optimization of the concentration of fuel, gel, and the amount of enzyme at the cathode were also examined. The maximum power density in the proposed system was approximately 121μW/cm2, an enhancement of approximately 2.5 times that in the case of using liquid fuel. For the power density after 24h, the fuel gel was superior to the fuel liquid.

The demand for enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) as power sources or auxiliary power sources for small devices is expected to increase in the near future. EBFCs have advanced properties and do not require a separator, depending on the substrate specificity of the enzyme. Two direct electron transfer (DET)-type enzymes were used to modify anodes (length 5mm, width 4mm) by a chemical modification method using a condensation agent. The DET-type enzymes used in this study were pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (PQQ-GDH) with glucose as a reaction substrate and fructose dehydrogenase (FDH) using fructose as a reaction substrate. Carboxyl groups were attached to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) that act as catalyst carriers, activated to other functional groups, and reacted with the amino groups of the enzyme by the condensation agent to form covalent bonds. As a result, the upper limit of the concentration, considered to be the reaction limit, was raised as compared with that of EBFC modified with only one kind of enzyme for each electrode prepared by the same process. The output voltage was 0.155V, and the maximum power density was 80.08µW/cm2.

In this study, we optimized the reforming of bilirubin oxidase (BOD) using graphene-coated carbon fiber woven fabric (GCFC) as an electrode, and The performance of the cathode in which synthesized 1-pyrene butyric acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (PBSE) and 2,5-dimethyl-1-phenyl-1-H-pyrrole-3-carbaldehyde (DPPC) were added, was evaluated. In addition, the prototype evaluation of the atmospheric-exposure-type ascorbic acid enzyme biofuel cell (AAEBFC) using the improved GCFC cathode was performed. The area of both the anode and cathode electrodes was 5mm × 5mm. No modification was performed to the anode, and only the cathode was coated with the enzyme BOD. In the work, for the AAEBFC using the BOD-modified cathode, an output of 238.5µW/cm2 was obtained at 0.245V. Further, in the AAEBFC using the DPPC-PBSE-BOD-modified cathode, an output of 338.8µW/cm2 was obtained at 0.292V. The output in this work was improved by approximately 1.4 times by the additives.

Technological developments in direction control of axonal outgrowth are a must for advances in regenerative medicine of the nervous system. In order to solve the problem, we fabricate a new neural cell culture sheet by applying the soft lithography technique to micro-patterning of the extracellular matrix and using thin-film biodegradable polymer for the scaffold. Micro-trenches were coated with Dulbecco's phosphate-buffered saline (-) containing laminin, using micro-molding in capillaries (MIMIC), a soft lithography technique. Biodegradable thin films with micro-trenches were fabricated by UV-curing a polyanhydride solution covering the negative SU-8 mold through thiol-ene polymerization. Both approaches were performed conveniently, rapidly, and accurately. It is thought that these techniques are excellent in terms of convenience and high speed, and can contribute greatly to regenerative medicine.

The gap states of tetratetracontane (C44H90; TTC), which is a model oligomer of polyethylene, was examined by using high-sensitivity UV photoemission spectroscopy (HS-UPS). The high sensitivity enabled us to directly observe the weak gap states distributed in the HOMO-LUMO gap from the valence band top to 3.0 eV below the vacuum level. On the basis of the density-of-states derived from UPS results, the tribocharging nature of polyethylene was discussed in comparison with our previous result for nylon-6,6 film.

On surfaces of tris-(8-hydroxyquinolate) aluminum (Alq) and tris(7-propyl-8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (Al7p) thin-films, positive and negative polarization charges appear, respectively, owing to spontaneous orientation of these polar molecules. Alq is a typical electron transport material where electrons are injected from cathode. Because the polarization charge exists at the Alq/cathode interface, it is likely that it affects the electron injection process because of Coulomb interaction. In order to evaluate an impact of polarization charge on electron injection from cathode, electron only devices (EODs) composed of Alq or Al7p were prepared and evaluated by displacement current measurement. We found that Alq-EOD has lower resistance than Al7p-EOD, indicating that the positive polarization charge at Alq/cathode interface enhances the electron injection due to Coulomb attraction, while the electron injection is suppressed by the negative polarization charge at the Al7p/Al interface. These results clearly suggest that it is necessary to design organic semiconductor devices by taking polarization charge into account.

In this work, gold powder made from gold leaf investigated to have the potential as a filler of conductive ink. The resistance of a conductive film decreased from 6.2kΩ to 1 Ω by adding only 2.0wt% of gold powder to conductive polymer (PEDOT:PSS) ink. The change of the resistance depends on the characteristics of gold powder. Gold powder with smaller and uniform sizes and good dispersibility is beneficial to form a continuous percolation network.

In this work, we have successfully patterned OLED glass substrates with a novel Yb-doped femtosecond laser. Such patterns can simultaneously increase the outcoupling efficiency up to 24.4%, as a result of reducing substrate waveguided light by scattering at the substrate/air interface and reduce the viewing angle dependence of the electroluminescent spectra.

We report the control of threshold voltage (Vth) for low voltage (5V) operation in OFET by using double gate dielectric layers composed of poly (vinyl cinnamate) and SiO2. We succeeded in realizing a driving voltage of -5V and Vth shift by c.a. 1.0V. And programmed Vth was almost unchanged for 104s, where the relative change of Vth remains more than 99%.

We have developed the flexible dual-gate OFET based pressure sensor using a thin polyethylene naphthalate (PEN, 25 µm) film as a substrate. The performance was equivalent to that fabricated on the glass substrate, and it could also be used on the curved surface. Drain current in the flexible pressure sensor was increased according to the pressure load without application of gate voltage. The magnitude of the change in drain current with respect to pressure application was about 2.5 times larger than that for the device on the glass substrate.

The thin film organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs) using organic semiconductors are inferior to oxgen-resistance and water-resistance, and the OPVs have a drawback that the photoelectric conversion efficiency (η) is low. For high efficiency of the OPVs, control of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure in the active layer is demanded. Therefore, it is thought that we can control the BHJ structure easily if we can bring a change in the aggregated structure and the crystallinity of the BHJ structure by introducing the third component that is different from the organic semiconductor into the activity layer. In this study, we introduced peptide consisting of phenylalanine of 2 molecules into the active layer prepared by poor solvent addition effect for the organic thin film solar cells and intended to try high efficiency of the organic thin film solar cells and examined the electrochemistry characteristic of the cells.

Semitransparent organic solar cells were fabricated using lamination process. The devices were realized by using two independent substrates with transparent indium-tin-oxide electrode. One substrate was coated with poly(ethylenedioxy-thiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) layer and active layer of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) and (6,6)-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester mixture. Another substrate was coated with ultra-thin polyethylenimine ethoxylated. The two substrates were laminated using hot press system. The device exhibited semitransparency and showed typical photovoltaic characteristics with open voltage of 0.59 V and short circuit current of 2.9 mA/cm2.

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) usingpolydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)-based organic-inorganic hybrid materials as binders can be used to prepare alumina-binder composites on metal substrates. Herein, we investigated the deposition mechanism of PDMS-based polymers. The composition and porosity of EPD composites can be controlled by adjusting the EPD condition, and shape of alumina particles.

Hydrophobic DNA (H-DNA) nano-film was formed on a thin glass plate of 50μm thick working as a slab optical waveguide. Bromothymol blue (BTB) molecules were immobilized from aqueous solution with direct contacting to the H-DNA nano-film for 20 minutes. From changes in absorption spectra observed with slab optical wave guide (SOWG) during automated solution exchange (SE) processes for 100 times, it was found that about 95% of bromothymol blue (BTB) molecules was immobilized in the H-DNA nano-film with keeping their functionality of color change responsible to pH change in the solution.
