    The Kobayashi potential in electromagnetic theory is reviewed. As an illustration we consider two problems, diffraction of plane wave by disk and rectangular plate of perfect conductor. Some numerical results are compared with approximated and experimental results when they are available to verify the validity of the present method. We think the present method can be used as reference solutions of the related problems.

    Diffraction field by a wide and thick slit on a conducting screen has been analyzed. High frequency ray-mode coupling analysis has been utilized, and the total diffracted or radiated field in each region is considered as a summation of successive modal radiation contribution due to the original modal excitation by the incident plane wave. Our derived results are compared with those obtained by other solutions, and good agreement has been observed, and the validity of our formulation is confirmed.

    The problem of a Gaussian beam that is incident on a plane dielectric interface from a denser dielectric medium to a rarer one and is reflected at the interface has been important research subjects studied by many researchers. In this paper, we have obtained a novel uniform asymptotic solution for reflection and beam shift of the Gaussian beam that is incident on the interface from the denser medium. The uniform asymptotic solution consists of the geometrically reflected beam, the lateral beam if any, and the newly derived transition beam which plays an important role in the transition region near the critical angle of the total reflection. We have confirmed the validity of the uniform asymptotic solution by comparing with the reference solution obtained numerically from the integral representation. We have shown that, in addition to the Goos-Hänchen shift and the angular shift, the Gaussian beam is shifted to either direction by the interference of the geometrically reflected beam and the lateral beam near the critical angle of the total reflection.

    Evaluation of addition coefficients introduced by the addition theorems for vector spherical harmonics is one of the most intractable problems in electromagnetic scattering by multi-sphere systems. The derivation of the analytical expressions for the addition coefficients is lengthy and complex while the computation of the addition coefficients is annoyingly time-consuming even with the reasonably fast computers available nowadays. This paper presents an efficient algorithm for calculating addition coefficients which is based on the recursive relations of scalar addition coefficients. Numerical results from the formulation derived in this paper agree with those of previous published results but the algorithm proposed here reduces the computational time considerably. This paper also discusses the strengths and limitations of other formulations and numerical techniques found in the literature.

    This paper deals with reflection and transmission of a TE plane wave from a two-dimensional random slab with slanted fluctuation by means of the stochastic functional approach. Such slanted fluctuation of the random slab is written by a homogeneous random field having a power spectrum with a rotation angle. By starting with the previous paper [IEICE Trans. Electron., Vol. E92-C, no.1, pp.77-84, January 2009], any statistical quantities are immediately obtained even for slanted fluctuation cases. The first-order incoherent scattering cross section is numerically calculated and illustrated in figures. It is then newly found that shift and separation phenomena of the leading or enhanced peaks at four characteristic scattering angles take place in the transmission and reflection sides, respectively.

    In the scattering problem of periodic gratings, at a low grazing limit of incidence, the incident plane wave is completely cancelled by the reflected wave, and the total wave field vanishes and physically becomes a dark shadow. This problem has received much interest recently. Nakayama et al. have proposed “the shadow theory”. The theory was first applied to the diffraction by perfectly conductive gratings as an example, where a new description and a physical mean at a low grazing limit of incidence for the gratings have been discussed. In this paper, the shadow theory is applied to the analyses of multilayered dielectric periodic gratings, and is shown to be valid on the basis of the behavior of electromagnetic waves through the matrix eigenvalue problem. Then, the representation of field distributions is demonstrated for the cases that the eigenvalues degenerate in the middle regions of multilayered gratings in addition to at a low grazing limit of incidence and some numerical examples are given.

    In this paper, we apply an improved method for the guiding problem of dielectric waveguide with arbitrary inhomogeneous media along the middle layer introduced the defect layers, and analyzed the propagation characteristics of dielectric waveguide composed of dielectric circular cylinders and the arbitrary inhomogeneous media in the middle layer by using a combination of the improved Fourier series expansion method and multilayer method. Numerical results are given for the propagation constants in the first stop band regions, and the distribution of energy flow for both TE0 and TM0 modes. The influence of permittivity and the shape variation of arbitrary inhomogeneous media are discussed in the first stop band regions.

    This paper presents the iterative progressive numerical methods (IPNMs) based on the induced dimension reduction (IDR) theorem. The IDR theorem is mainly utilized for the development of new nonstationary linear iterative solvers. On the other hand, the use of the IDR theorem enables to revise the classical linear iterative solvers like the Jacobi, the Gauss-Seidel (GS), the relaxed Jacobi, the successive overrelaxation (SOR), and the symmetric SOR (SSOR) methods. The new IPNMs are based on the revised solvers because the original one is similar to the Jacobi method. In the new IPNMs, namely the IDR-based IPNMs, we repeatedly solve linear systems of equations by using a nonstationary linear iterative solver. An initial guess and a stopping criterion are discussed in order to realize a fast computation. We treat electromagnetic wave scattering from 27 perfectly electric conducting spheres and reports comparatively the performance of the IDR-based IPNMs. However, the IDR-based SOR- and the IDR-based SSOR-type IPNMs are not subject to the above numerical test in this paper because of the problem with an optimal relaxation parameter. The performance evaluation reveals that the IDR-based IPNMs are better than the conventional ones in terms of the net computation time and the application range for the distance between objects. The IDR-based GS-type IPNM is the best among the conventional and the IDR-based IPNMs and converges 5 times faster than a standard computation by way of the boundary element method.

    Error analysis of the multilevel fast multipole algorithm is studied for electromagnetic scattering problems. We propose novel error prediction and control methods and verify that the computational error for scattering problems with over one million unknowns can be precisely controlled under desired digits of accuracy. Optimum selection of truncation numbers to minimize computational error also will be discussed.

    An inter-vehicle communication system for the 720MHz band that is designed to prevent car crashes at intersections has recently been proposed in Japan. This paper presents an analysis of the propagation characteristics of an intersection surrounded by concrete block walls in a residential area. The propagation characteristics were analyzed for the first time using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. We investigated the influence of wall thickness and source locations on the propagation characteristics. The results of our investigation showed that the most commonly used wall thickness and source locations do not strongly affect propagation loss. Furthermore, we analyzed the power delay profile and delay spread by taking into consideration the structure of the concrete block walls.

    Numerical analysis of the photoinductive (PI) field mapping technique for characterizing the eddy-current (EC) probes with tilted coils above a thin metal film was investigated using a two-dimensional transient finite element method (FEM). We apply the FEM model of PI method to observe the influence of metal film materials on the field-mapping images used to characterize EC probes. The effects of film thickness on the PI mapping signal are also shown and discussed. The simulation results using the proposed model showed that the PI signals largely depend on the thermal conductivity and the thickness of the thin metal film. The field-mapping signals using the appropriate actual metal film material for EC probe coil with 0°, 5°, 10°, 15°, and 20° tilt angle are also examined. We demonstrate that the higher resolution in field-mapping images of commercial EC probes can be obtained by given higher thermal conductivity and thinner thickness of metal film. The fundamental understanding of distinct field distribution will aid in the selection of the higher-quality EC probe for accurate inspection with EC testing.

    This paper deals with the diffraction of a transverse magnetic (TM) plane wave by a perfectly conductive periodic surface by an integral method. However, it is known that a conventional integral method does not work for a critical angle of incidence, because of divergence of a periodic Green's function (integral kernel). To overcome such a divergence difficulty, we introduce an image Green's function which is physically defined as a field radiated from an infinite phased array of dipoles. By use of the image Green's function, it is newly shown that the diffracted field is represented as a sum of radiation from the periodic surface and its image surface. Then, this paper obtains a new image integral equation for the basic surface current, which is solved numerically. A numerical result is illustrated for a very rough sinusoidal surface. Then, it is concluded that the method of image Green's function works practically even at a critical angle of incidence.

    Asymptotic expansions of the amplitudes of the direct and scattered waves in a waveguide system with an imperfection core are derived for large core number and the partial cancellation of the direct wave by the scattered wave is shown in detail. The total power of light in the cross section of a waveguide system is analytically derived and it is shown that the total power of the sum of the direct and scattered waves decreases from that of the direct wave because of the cancellation, the difference of the total power transfers to the localized wave and the total power of light is conserved.

    We introduce a novel method to optimize field decomposition for a mode matching technique. Using our method, expanded mode numbers can be minimized to achieve the desired digits of computational accuracy.

    This brief paper proposes a method for calibration of GPR pulse waveforms that is effective for identification of buried objects in the ground and/or in concrete structures. This approach is based on the inverse filtering operation that eliminates the influence of GPR antenna characteristics, and a response from a flat metal plate is employed as a reference data for calibration. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, it is applied to actual experimental data measured by the UWB-GPR antennas. The results show the validity of the method and importance of the waveform calibration for target identification.

    The electric field mill in our underground observation room detected a co-seismic electromagnetic signal in the vertical electrostatic field ca. 8s after the origin time of the Niigataken Chuetsu-oki Earthquake in 2007, but ca. 30s before the arrival time of the P-waves.

    A total-field/scattered-field (TF/SF) boundary for the constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method is proposed for multi-dimensional electromagnetic problems. Incident fields are added to or subtracted from update equations in order to satisfy advection equations into which Maxwell's equations are reduced by means of the directional splitting. Modified incident fields are introduced to take into account electromagnetic fields after advection. The developed TF/SF boundary is examined numerically,and the results show that it operates with good performance. Finally, we apply the proposed TF/SF boundary to a scattering problem, and it can be solved successfully.

    The metallic waveguide is one of many effective media for millimeter- and submillimeter-waves because of the advantage of its low-loss nature. This paper describes the fabrication method of PTFE-filled waveguide components with the use of the SR (synchrotron radiation) direct etching process of PTFE, sputter deposition of metal, and electroplating. PTFE is known as a difficult material to process with high precision. However, it has been reported that PTFE microstructures can be fabricated by the direct exposure to SR. First, an iris-coupled waveguide BPF with 5-stage Chebyshev response is designed and fabricated for the Q-band. It is demonstrated that the present process is applicable for the fabrication of the practical components inclusive of narrow patterns. Then, a cruciform 3dB coupler with air-filled posts is designed and fabricated for the Q-band. Directivity and matched state of the coupler can be realized by “holes” in the dielectric material. The measurement results are also shown.

    A 20kHz audio-band ADC with a single pair of power and ground pads is implemented for a digital electret microphone. Under the limited power/ground pad condition, the switching noise effect on the signal quality is estimated via post simulations with parasitic models. Performance degradation is minimized by time-domain noise isolation with sufficient time-spacing between the sampling edge and the output transition. The prototype ADC was implemented in a 0.18µm CMOS process. It operates under a minimum supply voltage of 1.6V with total current of 420µA. Operating at 2.56MHz clock frequency, it achieves 84dB dynamic range and a 64dB peak signal-to-(noise+distortion) ratio. The measured power supply rejection at a 100mVpp 217Hz square wave is -72dB.

    In-place AC measurements of the signal gain and substrate sensitivity of differential pair transistors of an analog amplifier are combined with DC characterization of the threshold voltage (Vth) of the same transistors. An on-chip continuous time waveform monitoring technique enables in-place matrix measurements of differential pair transistors with a variety of channel sizes and geometry, allowing the wide coverage of experiments about the transistor-level physical layout dependency of substrate noise response. A prototype test structure uses a 90-nm CMOS technology and demonstrates the geometry-dependent variation of substrate sensitivity of transistors in operation.

    An inductorless low noise amplifier (LNA) with active balun for digital TV (DTV) applications is presented. The LNA exploits a noise cancellation technique which allows for simultaneous wide-band impedance matching and low noise design. The matching and amplifier stages in the LNA topology perform single-ended to differential signal conversion with balanced output. The second and third-order nonlinearity of the individual amplifiers as well as the distortion caused by the interaction between the stages are suppressed to achieve high IIP2 and IIP3. A method for intrinsic cancellation of the second-order interaction is employed to reduce the dependence of the IIP3 on the frequency spacing between the interfering signals in the two-tone test of DTV tuners. Fabricated in a 0.18µm CMOS technology, the LNA core size is 0.21mm2. Measurements show that the LNA IIP3 and IIP2 are +12dBm and +21dBm, respectively. The IIP3 variation is less than 5dB in the 10MHz to 200MHz frequency spacing range. A voltage gain of 14.5dB and a noise figure below 4dB are achieved in a frequency range from 100MHz to 1GHz. The LNA consumes 11mA from a 1.8V supply voltage.

    An adaptive and iterative intertrack-interference (ITI) cancelling scheme is described for multi-track signal detection in inter-track asynchronous shingled write magnetic recording. There is write-clock frequency drift in asynchronous recording systems. Read-back signals obtained with a wide read head scanning narrow tracks thus suffer from not only intersymbol interference (ISI) but also time-variant ITI. To efficiently cope with static ISI and time-variant ITI, multi-track soft interference cancellers and two-dimensional partial-response filters are incorporated based on per-survivor processing into each trellis state defined in a one-dimensional/two-dimensional trellis-switching max-log-MAP detector. In addition, the computational complexity can be reduced based on channel interpolation and intermittent TDPR-filter control by allowing small degradation in signal detection. Computer simulation results in media-noise-dominant environments demonstrate that the proposed adaptive and iterative ITI canceller achieves bit error rates close to those obtained in a non-ITI case when the read-head off-track ratio is up to 50% in write-clock frequency difference of 0.02%.

    An iterative inter-track interference (ITI) cancelling scheme is described for multi-track signal detection in nonbinary (NB)-LDPC-coded two-dimensional magnetic recording. The multi-track iterative ITI canceller that we propose consists of multi-track soft interference cancellers (SICs), two-dimensional partial response (TDPR) filters, noise-predictive max-log-MAP detectors, and an NB-LDPC decoder. TDPR filters using an ITI-suppressing tap-weight vector mitigate ITI in the first iteration. Multi-track SICs and TDPR filters adjusted to the residual two-dimensional ISI signals efficiently detect multi-track signals in the latter iterations. The simulation results demonstrated that our proposed iterative multi-track ITI canceller achieves frame error rates close to those obtained in a non-ITI case in media-noise-dominant environments when the both-side off-track ratio is up to 50%.

    In this paper we present a 0.25-1.0V, 0.1-200MHz, 256×32, 65nm SRAM macro. The main design techniques include a bitline leakage prediction scheme and a non-trimmed non-strobed sense amplifier to deal with process and runtime variations and data dependence.
