When a monochromatic electromagnetic plane wave is incident on an infinitely extending surface with the translation invariance property, a curious phenomenon often takes place at a low grazing angle of incidence, at which the total wave field vanishes and a dark shadow appears. This paper looks for physical and mathematical reasons why such a shadow occurs. Three cases are considered: wave reflection by a flat interface between two media, diffraction by a periodic surface, and scattering from a homogeneous random surface. Then, it is found that, when a translation invariant surface does not support guided waves (eigen functions) propagating with real propagation constants, such the shadow always takes place, because the primary excitation disappears at a low grazing angle of incidence. At the same time, a shadow form of solution is proposed. Further, several open problems are given for future works.

In this paper, we have derived a novel integral representation for the ground wave propagation over land-to-sea mixed-paths by applying the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff integral theorem. By using the method of stationary phase applicable uniformly as the stationary phase point approaches the endpoint of the integral, we have derived the asymptotic solution for the scattered fields consisting of the first-order and the second-order diffraction terms. We show that the asymptotic solution thus derived agrees with the asymptotic solution derived by applying the aperture field method (AFM) and the method of stationary phase. We have confirmed the validity and the utility of the novel integral representation and its asymptotic solution by comparing with the widely used mixed-path theorem and the experimental measurement performed in Kanto area and Tokyo bay.

Inter-vehicle communication (IVC) system using 700MHz band to prevent car crashes has been proposed recently. In this paper, we first apply the FDTD method to the analyses of propagation characteristics at an intersection for IVC. We investigate the propagation characteristics considering the electrical conductivities, thickness and windows of building wall and pedestrians. As a result, it is shown that the electrical conductivities and thickness of building wall have a slight influence. In contrast, windows and pedestrians have a great influence on the propagation characteristics. Furthermore, the azimuth delay profiles are obtained by using the MUSIC algorithm.

This paper presents flexible inner-outer Krylov subspace methods, which are implemented using the fast multipole method (FMM) for solving scattering problems with mixed dielectric and conducting object. The flexible Krylov subspace methods refer to a class of methods that accept variable preconditioning. To obtain the maximum efficiency of the inner-outer methods, it is desirable to compute the inner iterations with the least possible effort. Hence, generally, inaccurate matrix-vector multiplication (MVM) is performed in the inner solver within a short computation time. This is realized by using a particular feature of the multipole techniques. The accuracy and computational cost of the FMM can be controlled by appropriately selecting the truncation number, which indicates the number of multipoles used to express far-field interactions. On the basis of the abovementioned fact, we construct a less-accurate but much cheaper version of the FMM by intentionally setting the truncation number to a sufficiently low value, and then use it for the computation of inaccurate MVM in the inner solver. However, there exists no definite rule for determining the suitable level of accuracy for the FMM within the inner solver. The main focus of this study is to clarify the relationship between the overall efficiency of the flexible inner-outer Krylov solver and the accuracy of the FMM within the inner solver. Numerical experiments reveal that there exits an optimal accuracy level for the FMM within the inner solver, and that a moderately accurate FMM operator serves as the optimal preconditioner.

This paper presents a formulation of two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide devices formed by circular cylinders. The device structures are considered as cascade connections of straight waveguides. Decomposing the structure into layers of the cylinder arrays, the input/output properties of the devices are obtained using an analysis method of multilayer structure. We introduce periodic boundary conditions in the direction perpendicular to the wave propagation, and the Floquet-modes of each layer are calculated by the Fourier series expansion method with the help of the recursive transition-matrix algorithm. Then, the input/output properties of the devices are obtained by recursive calculation of scattering matrix with each layer. The presented formulation is validated by numerical experiments by comparing with the previous works.

This paper proposes a further improved technique on the stochastic functional approach for randomly rough surface scattering. The original improved technique has been established in the previous paper [Waves in Random and Complex Media, vol.19, no.2, pp.181-215, 2009] as a novel numerical-analytical method for a Wiener analysis. By deriving modified hierarchy equations based on the diagonal approximation solution of random wavefields for a TM plane wave incidence or even for a TE plane wave incidence under large roughness, large slope or low grazing incidence, such a further improved technique can provide a large reduction of required computational resources, in comparison with the original improved technique. This paper shows that numerical solutions satisfy the optical theorem with very good accuracy, by using small computational resources.

A two-dimensional filter for photonic label recognition system using time-to-space conversion and delay compensation was designed using Genetic-Algorithms (GA). For four-bit Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) labels at 160Gbit/s, contrast ratio of the output for eight different labels was improved by optimization of two-dimentional filtering. The contrast ratio of auto-correlation to cross-correlation larger than 2.16 was obtained by computer simulation. This value is 22% larger than the value of 1.77 with the previously reported system using matched filters.

This paper presents an efficient ray-launching method for 2D indoor propagation problem, by including crucial multiple reflection effect inside wall. We here focus on the derivation of the reflected and transmitted ray solutions at/through wall when a magnetic source is located in the indoor environment. An efficient approximation, which is called collective ray approximation, is carried out to bundle or collect the internal multiple reflected rays into the primary one. It is resultantly confirmed from the detailed numerical experiments that the derived collective ray solutions can be confidently effective when the internal reflections strongly contribute to the propagation characteristic in the propagation environment, regardless of angle of the incidence.

An asymptotic expansion of the amplitude of the scattered wave by an imperfection core in a waveguide system is derived and it is shown that the scattered wave is partially canceled by the direct wave at large distance and a shadow takes place. For z → ∞ where z is the distance along the waveguide axis the amplitudes of the direct and scattered waves decrease in proportion to z^-1/2 and in the shadow region the amplitude of the sum of both waves decreases in proportion to z^-3/2. To supplement the analytical results some numerical examples are shown.

The scattering of a plane wave from the end-face of a three-dimensional waveguide system composed of a large number of cores is treated by the volume integral equation for the electric field and the first order term of a perturbation solution for TE and TM wave incidence is analytically derived. The far scattered field does not almost depend on the polarization of an incident wave and the angle dependence is described as the Fourier transform of the incident field in the cross section of cores. To clarify the dependence of the scattering pattern on the arrangement of cores some numerical examples are shown.

A novel computational method is proposed to investigate electromagnetic scattering problems. It is error controllable and reliable simulation in time domain can be performed. We apply the proposed method to analysis of transient scattering from open-ended structures and discuss scattering mechanisms.

Locality of high frequency electromagnetic scattering phenomena is embodied and imported to the Method of Moments (MoM) to reduce computational load. The proposed method solves currents on small areas only around inner and edge stationary phase points (SPPs) on the scatterer surfaces. The range of MoM area is explicitly specified in terms of Fresnel zone number as a function of frequency, source and observer positions. Based upon this criterion, scatterer of arbitrary size and shape can be solved with almost frequency independent number of unknowns. In some special cases like focusing systems, locality disappears and the method reduces to the standard MoM. The hybrid method called PO-MoM is complementarily introduced to cope with these cases, where Fresnel zone number with analogous but different definition is used. The selective use of Local-MoM and PO-MoM provides frequency insensitive number of unknowns for general combination of source and observation points. Numerical examples of RCS calculation for two dimensional flat and curved surfaces are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and reduction of unknowns of this method. The Fresnel zone, introduced in the scattering analysis for the first time, is a useful indicator of the locality or the boundary for MoM areas.

A delay-compensation circuit for low-power subthreshold digital circuits is proposed. Delay in digital circuits operating in the subthreshold region of MOSFETs changes exponentially with process and temperature variations. Threshold-voltage monitoring and supply-voltage scaling techniques are adopted to mitigate such variations. The variation in the delay can be significantly reduced by monitoring the threshold voltage of a MOSFET in each LSI chip and exploiting the voltage as the supply voltage for subthreshold digital circuits. The supply voltage generated by the threshold voltage monitoring circuit can be regarded as the minimum supply voltage to meet the delay constraint. Monte Carlo SPICE simulations demonstrated that a delay-time variation can be improved from having a log-normal to having a normal distribution. A prototype in a 0.35-µm standard CMOS process showed that the exponential delay variation with temperature of the ring-oscillator frequency in the range from 0.321 to 212kHz can remain by using compensation in the range from 5.26 to 19.2kHz.

In this paper, two techniques for implementing a low-power pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are proposed. First, the time-interleaved correlated double sampling (CDS) technique is proposed to compensate the finite gain error of operational amplifiers in switched-capacitor circuits without a half-rate front-end sample-and-hold amplifier (SHA). Therefore, low-gain amplifiers and the SHA-less architecture can be used to effectively reduce power consumption of a pipelined ADC. Second, the back-end pipelined stages of a pipelined ADC are implemented using a low-power time-interleaved successive approximation (SA) ADC rather than operational amplifiers to further reduce the power consumption of the proposed pipelined ADC. A 9-bit, 100-MS/s hybrid pipelined-SA ADC is implemented in the TSMC 0.13µm triple-well 1P8M CMOS process. The ADC achieves a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of 62.15dB and a signal-to-noise distortion ratio (SNDR) of 50.85-dB for 2-MHz input frequency at a 100-MS/s sampling rate. The power consumption is 21.2mW from a 1.2V supply. The core area of the ADC is 1.6mm².

A 4-phase clock generator, which can dynamically change clock frequencies, duty ratios and I/Q balance, is proposed for on-chip timing margin testing. The clock generator macro is integrated into the microprocessor chip of the supercomputer SX-9, which is fabricated with a 65nm CMOS technology. It demonstrates frequency syntheses of 1.68GHz to 3GHz range, an instant frequency change capability for timing margin testing, duty ratio and I/Q balance adjustments of -12.5ps to 9.4ps with a 3.125ps step resolution.

A novel one-transistor dynamic random access memory (1T DRAM) cell has been proposed for a low-voltage operation and longer data retention time. The proposed 1T DRAM cell has three features compared with a conventional 1T DRAM cell: low body doping concentration, a recessed gate structure, and a P⁺ poly-Si gate. Simulation results show that the proposed 1T DRAM cell has < 1-ns program time and > 100-ms data retention time under the condition of sub-1-V operating voltage.

We fabricated a p-i-n photodiode (PD) with an integrated microlens, and demonstrated its high performance capabilities including high speed (35GHz), high responsivity (0.8A/W), and large misalignment tolerance (26µm), and an error-free 25-Gbit/s 10-km single-mode fiber transmission by using a 100-Gbit/s Ethernet quadplexer receiver module with the PDs.

This paper presents the design of a driver amplifier (DA) for a cordless mouse application, operating at the 2.4GHz ISM unlicensed band. The DA is a single-ended topology, and is composed of two stages: the first stage is a cascode amplifier to provide high gain and good input-output isolation, while the output stage is a simple common source amplifier that adopts a novel current reuse scheme to reduce the DC bias current by half. The DA implemented in a 0.18µm CMOS process has a 16dB gain at 2.4GHz, and it can drive a 3dBm to the antenna with an output stage drain efficiency of 31% and a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 20% while drawing 4.5mA from a 1.8V supply.

This paper presents an architecture and a circuit design of readout address compression for a high-speed 3-D range-finding image sensor using the light-section method. We utilize a kind of variable-length code which is modified to suit the 3-D range-finder. The best compression rate by the proposed compression technique is 33.3%. The worst compression and the average compression rate is 56.4% and 42.4%, respectively, when we simulated the effectivity by using the example of measured sheet scans. We also show the measurement result of the fabricated image sensor with the address compression.

High integration and low power operation of integrated circuits make noise sensitivity high. Therefore, it is important to reduce noise of circuits. A bias-offset transconductor is known as a linear transconductor. It is expected that noise sensitivity of the transconductor becomes higher due to improvement of linearity and reduction of power dissipation. This paper proposes a design method to reduce noise considering high linearity, reduction of power dissipation and small circuit size.

We obtained flat optical frequency combs by using the FM laser operation of a fiber ring laser and external intensity modulation. Extremely wide FM spectra can be easily obtained by the moderate internal phase modulation of an FM laser. We used an external intensity modulator to extract a linearly chirped part from the FM light in order to obtain flat spectra. In our experiments, we obtained a flat optical frequency comb with a spectral bandwidth of about 0.5THz and a power deviation of less than ±1.5dB.
