    This short paper aims to specify the features of structural analysis of living as social policy and investigate the effectiveness of this analysis as the method of living science. The main perspectives of structural analysis of living are as follows;
    1) Autonomous system of family life, 2) subjectivity and creativity, 3) social stratification, 4) regionalism. These perspectives should be preserved as the method of living science hereafter. Still remains many problems to these perspectives; especially, the relationship between space planning and social stratification is to be defined.

    The effect of dietary methionine on cholesterol and free amino acid levels in blood plasma was studied in Donryu rat fed 10% and 25% casein and soy protein isolate diets with or without cholesterol.
    In the tests carried out in the absence of cholesterol, the supplementation of methionine gave no change to the plasma cholesterol level of the rats fed on 10% and 25% of casein diets and 25% soy protein isolate diet, while a significant decrease in the cholesterol level in plasma of rats fed on a 10% soy protein diet with methionine was observed.
    On the other hand, the cholesterol level in plasma was significantly raised by the supplementation of cholesterol to any of the above-mentioned diets, especially when the rats were fed on 10% protein level. In this case, an increased cholesterol level in plasma due to the addition of cholesterol to diets was significantly prevented by the supplementation of methionine.
    Decreases of threonine and serine, and an increase of taurine in plasma free amino acids were observed by the supplementation of methionine to 10% casein diet and also to 10% soy protein isolate diet regardless of the supplementation of cholesterol. The same phenomenon was found in the rats fed on the 25% cholesterol free soy protein isolate diet with no supplementation of methionine.
    The addition of cholesterol to diet caused a specific decrease in the plasma threonine level, which seems to be independent of protein levels in diet.

    Effects of addition of pumpkin paste on the physical properties of pumpkin jellies by using three kinds of gel agents which were κ-carrageenan, agar, and gelatin were investigated by measuring texture properties, rupture properties, dynamic viscoelasticity, melting points, syneresises, friction coefficients. Sensory evaluation was also performed to clarify the palatability of pumplin jellies.
    1) Addition of pumpkin paste resulted in the increase of rupture stress on carrageenan jellies, the slight decrease of agar jellies, no effect on gelatin jellies.
    2) Addition of pumpkin paste resulted in the increase of dynamic viscoelasticities and melting temperatures, and the suppression of syneresises on the three kinds of jellies.
    3) The results of sensory evaluation indicated which the youth panel showed that carrageenan jellies were more tasty, but gelatin jellies were not, and elder panel were not showed significant difference between three kinds of jellies.

    The enzymic release of a model protein soil, crosslinked gelatin, has been observed in situ as an extended study of a series of those on the enzyme activity in detergency system. Namely, the frequency change of a quartz oscillator was traced for the release of the solid protein by Nagarse from the surface of the gold electrode. As observed in the former studies on dissolved protein, the synergetic effects were confirmed for the release by protease/nonionic surfactants, i.e., C12(EO)7 and C16(EO)7, and by protease/oxidizing agents, i.e., sodium perborate and sodium percarbonate.
    The conclusions are as follows :
    1) On addition of the enzyme in solution, the frequency of the quartz oscillator begins to decrease, and then turns to increase. These variations are interpreted as a result of the adsorption of the enzyme followed by the hydrolytic release of the gelatin from the electrode surface.
    2) The addition of the nonionic surfactants in solution enhances the release rate as compared with the absent case. On the other hand, the addition of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) or sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) enhances the release rate at near cmc., but gradually reduces the rate at higher concentrations.
    3) The synergetic effect of the oxidizing agents is oberved in the limited low concentration range.

    Four kinds of lower-body clothing during riding a bicycle ergometer were compared by computing the work efficiency. The efficiency is computed from the ratio of oxygen consumption rate and the mechanical work. The rate of oxygen consumption was measured from the expired gases. Efficiency falls when even a small restriction is caused by a difference in lower-body clothing. It was concluded that the order of utility of clothing suitable for riding a bicycle was a culotte skirt, slacks, jeans and a semitight skirt, fitting the empirical order.
    This is one method for investigating the influence of clothing on the human body.

    In the Enlightenment, there were two opposing forces : rationalist thought, based on scientific inquiry, and the essential nature of man, rooted in primitive drives.
    In the midst of this conflict, elegant costume was created with the influence of Rococo art. Understanding the mode of costume requires not only the study of the forms and the patterns of fabrics, but also investigation into the ideas which prevailed at the time.
    In this essay, the views of the Enlightenment philosophers on costumes are analysed.
    The sources for this research are “L'Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences des arts et des métiers” and the writings of such philosophers as Voltaire, Diderot and Rousseau. The results found in this investigation are as follows :
    1) Philosophers were generally very critical of the current modes of fashion.
    2) Voltaire agreed that it was necessary to maintain the social order by means of dress, but insisted that in order to express man's inner-self, an outwardly luxurious appearance was not necessary.
    3) Diderot, when he criticized religion, argued that religion had no moral impact on women's fashion.
    4) Rousseau reformed his own dress to correspond with his appearance and his essential qualities. He was generally critical of the modes of fashion, but sympathetically approved of those with good taste who could control the direction of fashion.
    It follows that the idea of costume of the time represented these two conflicting aspects of the Enlightenment. That is, the costume which was the indication of classes affirming the actual society, and the costume which expressed one's essential qualities not reflected in his appearance.

    The purpose of this report is to clarify the residential life and the housing needs of one-person households. For this purpose, the survey was carried out to the residents of apartments at the 5 areas of Tokyo in 1990.
    The findings are as follows;
    (1) The young age group of one-person households are about 50% of the one-person households and the middle and upper age groups are about 50%. Most of them are low income, and live in the rented apartments.
    (2) The main occasions to live alone are different among the age groups. The nearly 30% of the young age group prefer to live alone in future.
    (3) The one-person households are lately to go to a bed and lately to get up, and lately comming home. The upper age group go to bed more earlier, but do not always get up more earlier. The frequency of house keeping works is fewer for male, but it is more for the upper age group.
    (4) The intention of live to be worth investing are varied by the sex and the age groups. The male show the intention that the association with others is important.
    (5) The one-person households show the tendency of negative attitude to associate with neighbors. The female are concerned with living securely, and intend to live in the midtown area.
