The purpose of this paper is to understand what kind of consciousness senior high school students show toward wearing prescribed uniforms, if any differences of consciousness can be found among them, and if any could be found, what the differences are and what factors affect the differences.
Nine hundred and eighty samples (442 males and 538 females) from ten high schools (public and private) in Mie Prefecture were collected.
The results obtained are as follows :
1) Concerning a practical function, uniforms are of great convenience but physiologically and hygienically, they are of no good. Their symbolic function is given only a low estimation. Aesthetically uniforms are thought to be void of beauty and freshness and of no pleasure to wear.
As to the rule that regulates to wear uniforms, students take it for granted and have no doubt about it, but they don't see any necessity of being purnished when they break the rule.
2) The axes with which to judge what kind of consciousness students display toward uniforms are (1) if the students' evaluation of uniforms' symbolic function is high or low (2) if they consider to have uniforms desirable or if they have no clear view of them.
3) The factors that affect the students' consciousness toward uniforms are their way of clothing, school and home lives. Also individuality of each student much affects the consciousness.
