The larval characters of Mycalesis gotama amamiana Fujioka from Amami Island are very similar to those of the same subspecies from Okinawa Island, but are obviously distinguished from those of M. g. fulginia Fruhstorfer from the mainland of Japan or M. g. madjicosa Butler from Ishigaki Island. Results of crossing between the two subspecies, M. g. fulginia Fruhstorfer (♂) from Shizuoka Prefecture, the mainland of Japan, and M. g. amamiana Fujioka (♀) from Amami Island are followings: (1) a considerable number of the middle instar larvae hanged as a pre-pupa, which died without moulting ; (2) emerged adults were only males; (3) asymmetrical wing patterns were seen in most of the emerged ones. The facts suggest that amamiana is highly differentiated from fulginia as a subspecies by isolation of the Tokara Straits.

In this paper, the data and some notes on the two species of the tribe Pronophilini (Lepidoptera:Satyridae) are reported, which were collected in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (the Santa Marta Mountains), Colombia, South America, by the 1st Scientific Expedition of Shizuoka University to the Colombian Andes, 1967. Both the species are endemic to the Sierra Nevada and characterize the butterfly fauna of that region. Furthermore, 14 species of the Pronophilini were collected by the expedition above mentioned, the data of which will be reported in a subsequent paper.

In 1974, the authors had a series of field observation on Catopsilia at Kagoshima Prefecture, and reared the eggs laid by two females of Catopsilia Pomona Fabricius and three of C. crocale Cramer. The following results were obtained. 1) Of three examples of mating observed in the natural conditions at Yamakawa-cho (Kagoshima Pref. ), two were pomona x crocale. 2) Three batches of mixed offspring composed of pomona and crocale emerged from a female of ppmon aand two females of crocale. A batch of mixed offspring was supposed to occur also in the field. 3) All offspring of an individual of pomona were crocale. 4) Hatchability of the third generation deriving from the two females of crocale of which materal butterfly may be a single female of pomona is so high as shown by 100 and 93%. These results suggest that pomona and crocale, hitherto regarded as the dependent species, are the different phenotypes of a single species.
