Records of a migratory and nearly cosmopolitan species, Peridroma saucia (HUBNER), had been lacking from eastern Asia including Japan until recent years (OWADA, 1977). However, several individuals have been captured in the south-western region of Japan since 1975. Through a continuous survey of moths converged to light, since July, 1977, at the ridge (alt. 780 m) of Mt. Rokkosan, Dr. M. OGATA and the author captured 51 individuals. Based upon these specimens and the published literatures, following problems were studied and discussed. 1. The specimens can be divided into two forms based on the coloration of forewing. One is dark reddish black type, which is identified as f. saucia HUBNER, and another is yellowish brown type, identified as f. margaritosa HAWORTH. 2. Variations in the wing shape were quantitatively expressed as wing-width index, and notes on the factors regulating wing shape in insects were given. 3. From the literatures and the present records, problems on migratorial (dispersal) and behavioral habits of P. saucia were summarized. 4. In conclusion, it has been postulated that the species is a versatile wanderer to open environments, which is mainly created by human activities. Furthermore, the presence of different types of adaptation in Peridroma is suggested; namely, the remarkable adaptive divergence in such the isolated islands as Hawaii, and the extreme extension of distribution by a single migratory species as represented by P. saucia.

Three new species (two from Japan and one from Taiwan) will be described, eight species-group names will be sunk as junior synonyms, one species will be reduced to a subspecies, and one species will be placed in other genus by transferring from the originally combined genus. The last species is currently placed in the Acontiinae, Noctuidae, but it was added in this paper because its junior synonym was originally described as belonging to the Lithosiinae. Unless stated otherwise, all the specimens recorded in this paper are in my private collection.

Through the courtesy of Mr. Yasunori NISHIYAMA, I have had the opportunity to examine a male specimen of a Drupadia-species from Marinduque, the Philippines, which was unknown to me. As the result of further studies, I have concluded that this belongs to a new species.

New species of the genus Cryphia HUBNER (sensu lato), two from Japan and one from Chejudo Island, will be described, with some notes on related species and illustrations of the male genitalia of all the known northeast Asian species of the genus. They are clearly divided into two groups, referred to Cryphia (sensu stricto) and Bryophila, which I would like to consider as separate genera.

A catalogue of butterflies occurring on Santa Ana Island is submitted, comprising subspecies and associated distributions. Larval food-plants and species habits are included. Four new taxa, comprising two species and two subspecies, are figured and described from San Cristobal (or San Cristoval) Island; one new status, Phalanta exulans is sunk to the subspecies of P. alcippe, is included. Further figures include maps of San Cristobal and Santa Ana, and photographs of the lesser known taxa.

Egg diameters of Mycalesis gotama MOORE, from Shizuoka city, central Japan, and Mycalesis madjicosa BUTLER, from Okinawa Island, Ishigaki Island and Yonaguni Island, were compared. A specific difference was seen between the two species, M. gotama and M. madjicosa, in the egg diameters, with statistic significance. Obtained data showed that the former had a larger size than the latter in the egg diameter.
