To examine the relationships between the northward distributional expansion of the great mormon butterfly, Papilio memnon Linnaeus, and climatic warming in Japan, we analyzed a data set on temperatures near the northern range limit of the species for the past ca 60 years from the year 1940 until 1998. Within the distributional range of the species in southwestern Japan in the year 2000, a significant increase in temperature (i.e., climatic warming) occurred and a significant increase in the latitude of the northern range margins was detected during the period analyzed. That is, the latitude of northern range margins in the species increased with the increasing mean temperature of the coldest month and annual mean temperature in southwestern Japan. Thus, it is suggested that climatic warming as a major external factor may have played an important role in its northward expansion. The averages of annual mean temperatures and mean temperatures of the coldest month near the northern range margins were 15.46℃ and 4.51℃, respectively. Our analysis also suggested that there were different types of northward range expansion patterns of the species. We discuss the patterns mainly from the point of external factors.

The fluttering and feeding activities of Shijimiaeoides divinus asonis were observed in the Aso area of Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan. The peak population increased during periods of light rainfall during the April-May period of very high temperatures. Fluttering activity was correlated with sunlight intensity. The five species of plants were recorded as nectar sources for the first time. The favored colors of flowers were purple, yellow, and white in order of frequency. The butterflies may show a preference for feeding on the same flowers rather than different ones. Fluttering and feeding activities reduced between 12:30 and 13:30. To maintain the habitat of this butterfly, it is important to conserve Trifolium repens, as it is a favored source of nectar.

Blue-green coloration in larval integument and adult wing of Graphium sarpedon and some pigments responsible for the coloration were investigated in various light conditions. When larvae were reared under high intensity (5,000lux), the integument became green in color while it was yellow when the larvae were reared in darkness. The degree of green coloration depended on the intensity and period of irradiation. Blue-green coloration of the band region on the adult wing was also induced by light irradiation during adult development. Without irradiation, color of the band region was pale-yellow. In the larval integument as well as the adult wing of light-irradiated animals, blue pigment was found as a form of protein binding, and it seems to be sarpedobilin, which has been known as a kind of neopterobilin. These observations strongly suggest that light stimulates the accumulation of sarpedobilin in each tissue of G. sarpedon.

Hybridization of Papilio protenor demetrius Stoll and P.p. liukiuensis Fruhstorfer was studied. All hybrids between these two subspecies proved to be fertile, and their developmental process was normal. The adults of hybrids are intermediate between P.p. demetrius and P.p. liukiuensis in color.

One of the alpine butterflies, Erebia niphonica is distributed on some high mountains in central and northern Japan. It is found in some particular habitats in the alpine and "pseudo-alpine" zone of the high mountains in northern Honshu. In the first paper the authors aimed to examine the floral communities of the habitat of Erebia niphonica based on a field survey. A total of over 100 sites of the habitats is recognized, and it emerges that these habitats are located on five particular floral communities. In this second paper it is also studied that the relations of the vertical distribution pattern of Erebia niphonica and vegetation zone lacking the subalpine coniferous forest in the regions of heavy snowfall on the Sea of Japan side of northern Honshu, on the basis of ecological angle. Horizontal distribution of Abies mariesii, a major tree in subalpine coniferous forest and Erebia niphonica is also discussed.

Chemical analyses were conducted of male scent of Pieris napi collected in two districts, Yamaguchi Prefecture and Hokkaido. The androconial secretion of most individuals of Yamaguchi population comprised well-known compounds, linalool, nerol, neral and geranial, whereas some other males were found to secrete different and as yet unidentified monoterpenic components. We designate the former as Type I, and the latter, Type II. Further investigation on Hokkaido population revealed that it is of Type II. These findings are suggestive of the presence of at least two strains of P. napi of which male androconial secretion is chemically polymorphic.
