Iphiclides alebion tayal SHIROZU, subsp. nov. (Figs. 1-7) This new subspecies is a distinct insular race found in Formosa. The following two characters are most important in separating this new subspecies from the nominate one. 1) On upperside of hindwings, the blackish area occupying the posterior part of hindwings is much larger and more strongly enlarged basally than in the nominate race; space 3 almost blackish except for basal small pale area in this new race, while in the nominate race basal half of the space occupied by pale yellowish white ground colour, on which the median black band is passing; tornal orange patch in space 2 much reduced and the distal margins of the patches of spaces 1 and 2 almost in the same level, therefore black eye spot in space 1 connected with blackish area of space 2, while in the nominate race the orange patch in space 2 longer than that in space 1 and outer margin of the former patch situating more distally than that of the latter one, therefore blackish eye spot completely separated from the black area of space 2 by the orange patch. 2) In the new race, 8th blackish band on forewings counted from the wing base running through on the point where veins 7 and 8 are conjointed, while in the nominate race the band passing through on space 7 much more distal part from the point. Length of forewings: 34-38mm (♂). Habitat: N. Formosa (Vicinity of Urai). Holotype ♂, paratopotypes 4♂♂, Vicinity of Urai, N. Formosa, April 1961, CHING KIN YU leg.
